Project Monster Mini 8ight

So today I was bashing my mini 8ight and the bulk head hinge pin retainer cracked after taking one too many high speed jumps so as i started takig it apart i was thinking boy i wish this had a motor with some more guts to it and so begins another build... I had a mini revo/summit that i built a while back chilling since it has a dead esc and a dead servo i decided i could finally find my excuse to breathe new life into that project and make my mini 8ight into a project as well...so heres what we have so far traxxas velineon 380 motor mamba micro pro esc, futaba servo and a whole bunch of wheel and tire combinations and am going to eventually do almost all carbon fiber and the center plate in the mini 8ight is going to be carbon fiber as well...pictures to follow on the mini 8ight and the mini summit/revo well lets finish one project at a time

rustlererad3 09-22-2012 07:36 AM

Okay update time... motor and esc for now is Traxxas velineon 380 and mamba micro pro, i am going to get a sidewinder v2 esc most likely because I feel it will stand up to the abuse a bit better but i am running proline dirt hawgs 2.2 and I also am working on a mini sum8ight style chassis and body set up and will post pictures later, next upgrades include aluminum shock caps and aluminum hexes

rustlererad3 09-24-2012 04:31 PM

Okay so tonight I am finally gonna upload some pictures of my project

Lucid 09-25-2012 06:13 PM

i had to retake the pictures and i got them to work

rustlererad3 09-26-2012 10:45 AM

Next on my list are rpm rod ends, aluminum shock caps delrin front shock tower and i currently have installed an aluminum shock tower in the rear and an aluminum center bar for the electronics...also searching for a servo to drop in her

skyrider 09-26-2012 10:46 AM

Nice! I did a similar thing awhile back but ended up switching back because I preferred the zippyness with the stock tires. I first used the beadlocks, then went with dish rims as they were lighter.

yeah with the motor and gearing i am running she has plenty of raw power and speed she does a standing backflip currently, i should get a video of that or a video of some bashing it but the 380 long can has an incredible amount of torque... and i like the truggy body i am thinking a raptor body would look cool too

RepEvox 09-26-2012 12:44 PM

That M8 makes me anxious for a possible M8T coming out. It reminds me of the crt.5 by OFNA which I thought about converting to electric several years ago.

I have a feeling I will always be interested in RC cars...I lost interest and got back in the mix a couple of times.

Is there any issues with these wheels and tires rubbing on anything? Is the steering affected at all? Proline now has those titus beadlock wheels in a un-weighted version as well.

Croissant_Face 09-26-2012 06:11 PM

I gotta have those bead locks what are they

rustlererad3 09-26-2012 08:02 PM

proline dirt hawgs they are awesome on the truck it has so much traction both on and off road they are the best all terrain tires i have ever run on an rc vehicle hands down, and they dont rub but you definitely have to get used to them before you can really hammer with them on the truck i personally dont think the stock motor and gearing will handle them very well because they are a bit heavier but they are awesome and i bought a mini raptor to do a truggy style mini 8ight with and i also found a truggy body on ebay and bought that as well i couldnt help myself

rustlererad3 09-26-2012 10:01 PM

skyrider it looks your motor probably didn't have enough torque for the extra weight, that was why i went with a long can motor because i knew it would give me a great torque output...bigger heavier wheels require a motor with some meat and did anyone convert to aluminum hubs??

skyrider 09-26-2012 10:39 PM

I geared it lower and my motor gave me plenty of power. I was planning on getting a 28mm can but the 26mm can I had worked pretty well. I just realized I wanted to drive a buggy style car and and less of a truck.

rustlererad3 09-27-2012 05:30 AM

yeah i love the buggy aspect of her but i want to have some interchangeability as well

Croissant_Face 09-27-2012 06:25 AM

That's funny I was just looking at the raptor body. Think I'm gonna stay with a buggy body but go big wheels

rustlererad3 09-27-2012 08:37 AM

Ya I love the monster buggy it's a beast I am gonna modify my existing losi body to accommodate a little more room for more electronics that I am running and I am looking for a new servo as well

Croissant_Face 09-27-2012 03:56 PM

Yeah I have a ton of upgrades to do batts charger servo and gears for right now then get reall crazy

rustlererad3 09-28-2012 10:44 AM

so what are you gonna do for the servo and hat batteries are you running

GrimReminder 09-28-2012 03:25 PM

Hey rustler,

With the proline wheels and tires you run does the chassis still hit the ground? Or better yet with the buggy sitting on the table can you push down on the chassis and make it bottom out on the table front and back?

I like to jump a lot and I want to get these wheel and tires but if the chassis wont slap the ground then I will be breaking some shit for sure.

No idea on servo and batts just got back into this after years. All input is welcomed.

I think we have similar ideas on how we want are cars

i would agree and i am thinking either hitec or savox all metal gear servos and I just installed some purple rod ends on my truck today from rpm I am still looking for shock caps

Croissant_Face 09-29-2012 09:31 AM

I've read that some shocks from a traxxas mini work or losi and atomic make top caps

rustlererad3 09-29-2012 11:48 AM

yeah i have heard that...i have heard the shock off of a rustler front are options and that jato shocks work as well

Croissant_Face 09-29-2012 11:56 AM

Yeah the rustler shocks is what I was thinking of

rustlererad3 09-29-2012 12:04 PM

i think i am going to order jato shocks because jato shocks are adjustable and i am looking at buying a rear t bone bumper and a wider t bone bumper for the front as well...i just installed a delrin shock tower last night

YouSuckDude 09-29-2012 09:07 PM

I have the atomic alloy shock caps. Took forever to get here and the front ones scratch the second your buggy flips on its lid. Other than that I dig em. Wish they came in different colors.

rustlererad3 09-30-2012 11:07 AM

i will have to look into this atomic rc??

Croissant_Face 09-30-2012 12:15 PM

I think I'm gonna upgrade the shocks all together since I'll be running 1/10th wheels like you.

The stock shocks seem like they would be great for a track but for what I want to do I'll need more

rustlererad3 09-30-2012 02:43 PM

i just ordered traxxas jato shocks, the upgraded big bore ones i am going to run those and i am currently looking for springs for them

YouSuckDude 09-30-2012 05:09 PM

Those are probably too big. I think you need two sets of front ones

rustlererad3 10-01-2012 06:12 AM

Your correct good sir that's what I ordered for her

Croissant_Face 10-01-2012 04:59 PM

You do all the homework I'll jet copy hahaha

rustlererad3 10-01-2012 06:37 PM

okay I ordered them but they are out of stock so hopefully they come in and get shipped soon but yeah they are blue to give some contrast to my purple rod ends and I am looking at getting a t bone rear bumper as well and making it so that acts as my wheely bar and I want to get a white delrin upper plate for her to add some contrast to all the black on the truck

mrgreenfingers 10-02-2012 10:39 AM

nice

nice

rustlererad3 10-02-2012 11:38 AM

My shock tower for the front has arrived and I will be installing that and posting some pictures of that and the rpm purple rod ends

McFayy 11-27-2012 09:18 AM

What was your truggy body supposed to go on? Lol not sure what other 1/16-ish scale stuff might be close. I think this is the way I'm going to go once I buy a M8 :tire::tire::tire::D

rustlererad3 11-27-2012 09:24 AM

okay i am behind on posting pictures but i will upload some pictures this week and the truggy body that i went with came from TB-6 in canada i painted it but wasn't careful and the paint ran all over so its gonna be a beater body and then i am going to order another one and make another attempt at it
