lap counting system?

Hey Greg,
I am not sure what your budget is, but my recommendation would be the I-Lap timing system. It is much less expensive than the AMB system, but is just as reliable and uses the same protocol anyway. The owner of I Lap, Craig, is a fantastic guy to deal with too!
This system uses infrared technology, so you must build a detector "bridge" across one of your track lanes (I made mine out of 1" pvc pipe) to monitor cars that pass beneath the bridge. Each car gets its own transponder which must be placed on the chassis underneath a car window so a bridge detector can "see" it.
I have been using this system for 2 years and it has performed flawlessly!

I recommend I-lap also. I used it for a few years on my micro track with excellent results. I also have a TrackMate system that I would sell. The Trackmate is also IR, but is made in Western Canada. I switched because Craig is local and service, extra transponders, etc. is quick and easy.

I'll cast another vote for I-Lap. Been using ours for a couple years and it's great. Craig is easy to deal with also. LapsFree software is great also. been using it for more than 5 years. Had an AMB but don't miss it at all.

I have played with the webcam counter a few times but my cam is really old and only gets a few frames per second, so I would have to drive very slow for it to pick up anything. I like the software though it does everything you need as long as you can get the lighting and colors just right.

how does the webcam work? buy a webcam and software?

how does it know whos cars whos? what all would i have to have? and about how much will all of it cost?

The webcam lap counter uses car color to determine each car, so you must use pretty distinctive colors. All you need is to download free the software and a decent quality webcam. Follow the set up instructions and go race.
