Well my luck is running about normal! I was working on my 12C, and I switched to a #5 carbon T plate and lowered the knuckles by 1-0.2mm shim, and it was getting much better, then when going through the 180 I lost forward power and heard a tiny pop! I still have reverse, so I switched the motor wires, and the motor is good. So I pulled the circuit board and checked it under a magnified glass and see no burned traces or popped circuitry, but it stinks like the MANY AMPS I have replaced in others car audio systems! My Son has my Multi-meter, so I can't check anything specific on the board. It's my first Mini-z and a year and 2 months old, so out of warranty.
So I guess I'll be ordering 2 EVO boards, 1 for my 2.5 build and the other to replace the now fried RTR board! So I guess I'll need and EVO Top plate set to switch from a RTR to EVO board as the chassis is the same, correct? Thanks for any help! Drew update: I could only find 1 evo board, so I ordered it. As of the RTR board, I had run less than 20 laps when this happened. every thing was still cool, and even after running 100 laps it never got above lip warm the whole time I've owned it. |

Notes- Got a Nexx 90/94mm RM motor pod, and I had to go to 20mm rear rims and standard height tires and #2 axle holders with ride height at highest position to have enough clearance for the PN 70T! But I have no traction rolling issues, so the Nexx RM Pod is a huge improvment over the factory RM pod. Though I wish PN still had a 90mm pod as their fit and finish is better, at least with the few items I have compared. There's quite a bit of slop between the axle bushings and the mount, causing gap issues between the spur and pinion. It's a FUN car to drive and teaches me to be smoother with my inputs! Also I went to a carbon front body clip, and a PN CP334 (Toyota GT-One TS020) is the closest I could find. It is just a hair too short, and too thick, but I filed the front lip down to fit the MX-5. I'll post pics if anyone wants. No traction rolling but I had a few +10 second laps from hitting the inside corner off the straight and rolling and landing on the lid!

September 2023 Layout
New layout for September running clockwise. Tight and technical for a change. Drive fast!

Thanks for the help Traveler2! I was only able to find 1 EVO board in stock anywhere, and I scooped it up. It was at Hobby Addicts, it's the first time ordering from there, but they looked legit so I'll let yall know. I completely pulled the circuit board out of the 98mm, and really looked it over, and the only thing I can see that is bit off it the tiny capacitor doesn't look quite right. But I figured I will just use it to break in motors in since reverse works. I'm going to build the 2.5 with the EVO board that's on it's way, and I'm n the look out for a second EVO board. I already have 2 EVO receivers, and the ISC adaptor so I'm set there. I'm going to try out a brushless motor for the first time at this scale, so any recommendations would be appreciated! It is going in a PN mount and for Mini96 only, so I was figuring a 3500k.???
I REALLY LIKE the layout this month, both fast and technical. The MX-5 needs a bit more dialing in. It's turning well, but I get quite a bit of rear wheel hopping when I get into the throttle. I have a PN Dual Spring shock to add, and tires and T plates to try, and I also have some tungsten putty to add weight, as it's very light! Here's the pics of the 90mm with the Nexx 90/94mm RM Pod and Toyota GT1 PN carbon nose clip. If you look close you can see the notch I filed to get the thickness right for the MX-5. The thickness is good but it is about a half mill to narrow, so there is a bit of side to side play. I'm going to try plastic putty in the body mount hole to tighten things up. With 20mm wheels and standard height tires I have just under 1.5mm ground clearance under the PN 70T motor, and just under 3mm clearance at rear of chassis and just under 2.5 at the front. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...56b4b13cc.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...efc2a7fe1.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...479802ddc.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...736307014.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...c5a9edc2d.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...b7cb081b5.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...b2e8ddb2e.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...2c43101dd.jpeg Take Care and Hope Everyone is safe in this crazy weather! Drew P.S. Forgive the patch job on the positive motor wire, but it was 2mm short going from a MM to RM mount, But my Soldering supplies just got here, so I can now TRY to solder these tiny wires! Thanks EMU for the soldering Iron recommendation! Now to get a Magnifying visor so I can see these tiny connection with my old eyes! LOL I'll probably get on of those "Helping Hands" solder jig to help! |
That looks like the mount I run on my brushless 911 GT3, but I haven't tried it with the brushed motors. If you plan to try brushless on AAAs, then 3500 or Kyosho 4100 are the way to go. Both would keep you in the "Stock" class. Plenty of MZ601 EVO boards on eBay. Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up on ebay for the boards! I didn't think about it. And it is the same mount, and I'm guessing that the brushless motors are a better fit as the brushed are "oval" shaped, but it stays planted even with the 20mm wheels and full thickness tires. I have some full thickness KS-M Super Softs, then some PN and Kyosho low height tires from super soft to hard.
It's running good, just not great. I was able to turn a 4.63 second lap on the new layout, I just can't put power down as much as I would like. Just have to figure out should I go softer or harder on tires to help with wheel hopping. Or stay with the KS-M softs and change T plates? Anyway THANKS for all the help! And for now I'm sticking with AAA. I have all the stuff for Lipo, but AAA is just easy at this scale and size track. |
Traveler2, I REALLY LIKE that 911 GT3 body, that Paint is sweet! I was going to order another 2.5 chassis and build a Porsche class chassis, until I reread the rules and saw it has to be a Kyosho chassis. So I'm going to build an EVO with the parts I have, and a few I need to order. Then to find a 911 body that doesn't cost a fortune! I really want a white body, so I can paint it a color I can see. LOL
***update*** I snagged a 911 GT3 white body!!! MZN104 got it for $83! It's coming from Japan, so fingers crossed it makes it here, but the seller has a 99% rating over 14K transactions. SO I'm betting it will be ok! I was going to build a Pro Stock chassis, but after feeling the power of the EVO board and the 70T, which I have at 70% to control on the mini96, I would have to turn down a Pro Stock motor soo much I worry about cogging/issues with much reduced power levels. Is that an issue? I'm just trying to build different chassis so I don't have 3 stock class chassis. Thanks for all the help! Drew |
Was wondering where people were getting their Porsche bodies...
You can always come over to the AWD dark side with us! Got a buddy that just ordered a Atomic SZ2 and might have 1 or 2 more guys in the works. Ever have a thought for a kids class? 10 and under or something with open chassis (basically run what you brung) |

An AWD will be in the line up at some point, but I want to better master RWD first! I will be trying my first brushless setup soon with the EVO I am in the process of building.
Been running laps with my MX-5 90mm Narrow as I am in the process of painting my 12C, and I'm starting to get this layout down with 4.8 second avg with 4.5 second fast lap. So I'm getting the handling better, but I have to be gentle on the throttle or I get wheel hop, bad! I've dialed quite a bit out with the dual top shock, so I will be trying tires next. KS-M softs now, maybe Super Softs? Also will be adding weight as the car is light! As for the 911 body, I was lucky enough to find a "cheap" one on ebay. I could see spending $80, but not $150 most are asking! I have been looking for over a year, and just happened onto this one. Now another body to decide what color to paint! I WANT to paint some cool a$$ paint scheme on them, but I have trouble enough seeing solid colors at the speeds Mini-Z's travel! |
Well I have some KS Super Soft standard height fronts to try on the MX-5, where I bought KS-M's! Wrong tires is pkg. Not a huge deal, but weird. Man these super softs are grippy as hell almost sticky! It's been a few weeks since I dusted the track, so I'm off to do some cleaning!
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...3ab33fd47.jpeg I'll holler at Kenon on my next order and I bet they'll fix me up! Man a high of 91* was AWESOME!!! Take Care Guys! Drew |
Well I ran the KS Super Softs on the track before I clean it, and they shave off 0.3 tenths off my times, but the hopping/chattering is worse! It's rear chatter when applying power. It shows up when going through slow corners, and trying to rip back on the throttle. When on power in the sharp turns it chatters enough to throw off the car and put me into the wall. I guess I'll try T plates next.
Any Ideas? |

The autoscale Porsche bodies are 90mm and most of them are narrow. Hard to find for at good price these days but do pop up on ebay and in Facebook groups.
If you want to run AWD let me know and I will post some times with my SZ2. So far down to about 6:24 with a 4.589/fast lap. Need more consistency. |
