Custom Losi Micro
Hey guys, first post here on rctech. Names Matt, been in and out of the hobby for over a decade, finally slowly getting back into it now and picked back up on a project I started a few years back.
Long story short, I got a miss matched bag of parts that was enough to build a Losi 1/24 micro sct, came with a no name brushless system and a cheap micro 3 wire servo. Fast forward 2 years and with my new 3d printer started designing a rwd touring car chassis and stretching it to ~1/18th scale. I'm on the road right now. But the I will get some pictures up of what I've got so far later on in the evening. But essentially here's what I've got done to it.. Lengthened and widened chassis Rwd only Brushless with custom motor mount Upper chassis brace and esc and receiver holder Custom bellcrank steering system Custom rims Custom road rage tires Custom body (wip) So yea, been quite a fun and headache endured build. Runs pretty good, need to tweak some stuff to tone down over steer in the turns. Anyway, that's all for now! |
Here are some pictures of what has been completed.
Also a correction from the first post. It maintains the stock track width from the arms and knuckles, however my rims are 1.5x wider than stock, and taller as well. So that is were the track width widening comes from. Still using stock dog bones. If anyone knows of a axle that does a better job at retaining the rim than the stock one, please let me know. I very much dislike the slotted cylindrical axle the car comes stock with. The Ariel Atom-esk body that I am currently working on. **Edit** seems that I do not have the appropriate amount to post pictures  Damn. |
Well a little bit of an update here.
GOING AWD! Yes, Im accepting the fact that for basement enjoyment and competitiveness against a 1/18th AE Apex I will have to convert to awd. Currently configured, I cant even get to half throttle without the back end stepping out, and unfortunately its stopping me from being competitive. Secondly for switching, is braking. Rwd is fun and all, but as we know electric motors act as a drag brake when throttle is released, letting off the throttle steps the back end out, and the car doesnt stop quick enough for me with only rwd. So I have a few options here on how to convert it back to awd while still maintaining the stretched chassis. 1) order another drive shaft, cut and splice them 2) cut current shaft, add a section, then mate them again 3) fabricate a new male end of the shaft and attach it to current shaft. Ive so far gone with the 3rd option, going to run it and see how it goes, if it can handle the power and is durable, I will run it as is. Because of the awd I will need to slightly tweak the chassis. |
Alright guys I need your help, I finally stripped the pinion gear on my motor, but not the gear itself, just the shaft that is press fits onto the shaft.
I measured my motor shaft to be ~1.5mm OD, can someone please link me some pinions in that range? I would much rather them be brass/metal than plastic. I currently have a 12 or 13 tooth pinion. So something in the 10-12 range would be nice. Thanks all for the help. |
here is one i found on ebey that will probably fit:

I'm slightly disappointed in Losi, they made it very difficult to find information on what the pitch is on the gears. Nothing in the manual, nothing on their site, nothing on the replacement parts. I really would like to get some pictures up in this thread...
I use this website for 0.3 pitch gears for my losi trail trekker which I’m pretty sure has the same pitch gears as the losi SCT/Rally etc. Mikroantriebe by KK Produkcja. Microgears, Wormgears, Micromotors and RC Equipment. Those only have a 2mm bore though, so you can’t use the stock or brushless losi micro motors. |

0.3 pitch. I think it’s equivalent 64 pitch not sure though

Thanks, thats good to keep handy if I ever go with a larger brushless setup. Does anyone know how many posts I need before I can attach photos? |

Nice!
Maybe a GT24 body might work? The GT24s are longer than the Losi micros. |
Ive got some 1/18th bodies on the way from thebuildrc, theyre pvc, but ill reinforce them. Im going to have to scale the chassis up again, but that isnt an issue. Ill take care of that once I get the bodies in my hand.

Received my bodies! My buddy already came to collect his, but it was the gtr in red/silver color scheme.
I already scaled up the chassis so it should fit the body, ive just yet to instal it. The site listed them as pvc construction, but as you can see from the photo, they are VERY flexible. My initial impressions are very good, colors are nice and the decals are placed well. For 5$ I really cannot complain about the quality. Durability is another issue though, and we will see how that fares. One thing to note however is they are not really true 1/18th scale. They dont fit the apex 1/18 be AE without some cutting along the wheel wells and even still there is quite a bit of wheel extension past the body. They will fit rather well on mine, because its significantly less wide, but I will have a bit of wheel extension as well, hehe stance. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...2bde47ebda.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...e949f408e5.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rct...3b2d1bbf6b.jpg |

Well besides getting the body mounted, its all done. VERY happy with it, and think it looks bad ass, but of course I would think that.
Anyway hope you guys enjoy. |
