A quick reply to your question about a SP or HW esc.
I've build a HW xtreme stock esc in front of my TLR, but i did use a short case servo and a very small receiver and those short lipo batteries. I was able to build all my electronics in front of the car so i'm able to mount a fan above the motor. That was my maingoal.
You can see some pictures about it on page 592 of the TLR22 thread.

I used HB cyclone 18t pullies. The trf501 pullies and diff plates. This allowed me to make 16 ball diffs. The belts I used was from a xray for the rear and TRF415 front.
