Default Race # 6 results and report

Saturday:

At the close of Friday evening, this area had seen a decent amount of
rain. Saturday morning saw cool temperatures and a heavy overcast. Many
were worried if mother nature was going to cooperate, as she was
demonstrating a light drizzle early in the day. As luck turned out,
mother nature cooperated and gave us a nice breezy day with a light
overcast, perfect for racing in comfort!

First round qualifying was interesting to say the least. Art Carbonell
came out of quasi- retirement to race in the sedan class, winning his
heat in first round qualifying and putting himself within the top ten
qualifiers. Paul Wynn, who is a factory driver for Schumacher-USA
showed up to run his Schumacher Fusion sedan, which is a prototype and
the only one in the United States! Paul went on to win(Wynn?) the first
heat in the second round of qualifying, bumping Scotty Gray from the TQ
position.

1/10th outlaw saw the return of Fred Bowen-Smith, a/k/a Fastfred. Fred
finished second in his first qualifier with 20 laps, albeit while
running lean as can be and running out of fuel before the last turn and
drifting to a stop directly on the timing loop! Lazaro Alonso finished
first with the same amount of laps. Fred had numerous laps that were
much faster than Lazaro, but Lazaro turned more consistent laps and
that secured him the current TQ spot for 1/10 outlaw. Racer Rick
finished second behind Frank Vega in his round, but he was looking
quite impressive in his serpent, look out for him on Sunday! Doug Day
was having some trouble in his first round of qualifying after the wall
jumped out in front of his car, but he stayed clean during the second
round to finish in a respectable position. Jim Rice bumped the wall and
did a spectacular flip (triple lindy style!), sending his car in the
blue painted infield and his left front tire rolling down the track!

Terry Bryant flexed his muscles with his Mugen MRX-3 and showed us how
it’s done. Joaquin De Soto held his own one lap behind Terry. Scotty
Gray won his qualifier with her serpent 950, putting him in the TQ spot
for now. Terry is only one tenth of a second behind him! Mike Delgado
had some bad luck after colliding with another car during the first
round. Don Gottlieb showed up with a Mugen MRX-3 instead of his usual
SMP Slide, Drive it like ya stole it Don!

Sunday:

The weather was cooperating and qualifying was under way! 4 new racers
showed up today, giving us a full house. There are 4 full heats for
sedan, 3 for 1/10th outlaw, and 2 for 1/8th scale.

Heat #1 was dominated by Paul Wynn and heat #2 was dominated by Scotty
Gray. Tom Keele gave the turn marshals a good workout. It seemed that
his car liked to traction roll at almost every turn the track had to
offer. Omar Mcfarlane, who was absent for Saturday’s qualifying, showed
up to qualify his impact for the C main and his Mugen MTX-3 in the
sedan A main. Lazaro Alonso retained the 1/10th outlaw TQ spot and
Terry Bryant retained his in 1/8th scale.

Lower Mains:

Gerardo Martinez sliced and diced within the top three of the D main to
come out on top. Andy Martines and Tom Keele traded places numerous
times during the C main and put on a good show. Andy came out in first
with Tom only 1 second behind him on the same lap! Shawn Segura showed
that an old dog can’t be beat by winning the B main with his Mugen MTX-
2. Shawn’s father is his pitman and supports his son for the entire
series. Jarrod Pilone finished 10th with radio glitching problems.

The 1/10th outlaw C main was absolutely dominated by Omar Mcfarlane and
he bumped up to the B main. Omar was the leader for ¾ of the B main
when he spun out after brushing the wall, breaking his car. Collin
Ashley was only one lap down and inherited the lead. Omar was able to
fix his car and got back out only 2 laps down. He actually caught and
passed Collin, when he brushed the wall and got passed by Collin again.
Omar was hot on his tail and Collin got tangled up with a lapped car
and Omar was in first place again. Omar came into the pits for fuel and
his car stalled after fueling. This allowed Collin to pass him again.
Collin held onto the lead for the remainder of the race and lapped Omar
while he was in the pits. It was a very close race and very fun to
watch.

In the 1/8th scale B main, Lucas put on a good show and won the race.
Mark Harrison hit the wall and did a spectacular aerial maneuver,
flying over the wall. Lucas started first and finished first, he never
lost the lead! Go Lucas!

A mains:

Sedan:

The sedan A main was looking to be a good show, with three factory
drivers in this event (Paul Wynn from Schumacher, Art Carbonell from
serpent, and Scotty Gray (also from serpent).

Paul Wynn was TQ. The start of the race was exciting. It became the
Paul, Scotty, and Art show! Early on, Scotty passed Paul as well as
Art. Paul brushed the wall and rolled over, giving Scotty and Art some
room. Art and Paul got tangled up in the race and Art’s car tumbled end
over end. Jason Bell and Fast Fred helped to get Art back out quickly,
missing only half a lap! During the first round of pit stops, Paul
Wynn’s Mechanic held his body up wrong and the body got wedged between
the pipe and body. Fred tried to grab the car before it left the pits,
but couldn’t get a hand on it. He came back and his mechanic fixed it.

Scotty caught Art Carbonell, threatening to put him a lap down. After
putting some pressure on him, Scotty was able to get by Art cleanly. 8
minutes into the race, John Wong was plagued by car troubles, giving
his pitman a workout running after his car. 12 minutes into the race,
Scotty had one lap on the entire field. Omar had moved up to third
position by 15 minutes into the race. Scotty’s car died on the track,
but his mechanic, Jason Bell, reacted quickly and got his car re-fired
and back on the track. This gave Paul Wynn a chance to catch him and
eventually pass him. With Less than 7 minutes to go, Paul got tangled
up with a Lapped car and is giving Scotty a chance to catch up. With 3
minutes to go, Paul and Scotty were on the same lap and Scotty was
about 5 seconds behind him. It seemed that with 2 minutes to go, Paul
kicked it in overdrive and his car looked even faster! The only thing
that could get Scotty the lead was if Paul made a mistake, but Paul is
a veteran racer, and veteran racers have lots of patience. Paul
finished with 107 laps, about 15 second ahead of Scotty.

1/10th Scale Outlaw:

Lazaro Alonso was TQ for this race. He pulled away from the field and
held a nice lead. Douglas Day fell off early with car troubles. 10
minutes into the race, Collin Ashley had wheel hub problems, sending
his wheel rolling down the track and making his mechanic hustle to fix
it. Doug Day’s problems still plagued him as he was spotted actually
drifting backwards down the diagonal straight! Apparently his day was
over as he was spotted smoking a cigarette in front of the driver’s
stand with 19 minutes left! Lazaro only lost the lead twice in the race
and kept it after lap 39 to finish first with 115 laps.

1/8th Scale Outlaw:

Terry Bryant was TQ for this race. He looked good at the start, but he
broke after 15 minutes and that was the end of his weekend. Don
Gottlieb looked good with his MRX-3, but had some engine trouble and
gave his faithful pitman a much needed workout. Scotty Gray was
dominating the field, but he broke with 5 minutes to go, letting
Joaquin De Soto take over the lead and win!

All in all this was a good race weekend. I noticed more family oriented
racers this weekend than ever. The sunshine bandits put on a good race
for us. They always listen to our comments and suggestions. Thanks to
everyone who came out! We’ll see you next time 3/29-3/30!

They get there on friday and set up the driver's stand. The track is always set up.

So if you get there at 9 am on friday, you can practice, but it won't be on the driver's stand
