Default Shock oil

Hi all very possibly a noob question but I am in the process of building aluminium shocks for my M03. I'm fairly new to this but are the oil ratings the same as car engine oil? For example could I use 30w 40 or 40w 15 engine oil? Would that be the same thickness as 30w and 40w shock oil?
Thanks. Dan.

Also anyone happen to know what the standard oil that comes with 3 racing shocks is?

Don't use engine oïl. it can destroy o-rings.

Good point. I never thought of that. Needs to be silicone based. Anyone help with the 3 racing oil rating?

Some manufacturers still use oil weight as a viscosity rating however the more common standard is VST these days. Pick a brand that you have easy access to and get at least 3 weights to start with.
