Sorry just answered this in the wrong thread. Lol. Mine were a good fit and so I'd get onto Serpent America. Very unusual.

Default front spool blades

is the 4.0 still chewing up front spool blades like the original 411 did?

That was the bane of the otherwise awesome car. has there been any updates to strenghthen the front outdrive/bones to a stronger blade or just go metal to metal?

I have no proof, but my experience after 6 front aluspools from 3.0 to 4.0 they are a little tougher in material and does not start chewing up blades as fast. But the solution is using the out drives/spool from 4-x

The 4X is doing the same thing ( chewing the blades ! ) I tried to retro fit the orange Xray blades to the serpent driveshafts but it's a bit too big .

Default Front spool blades

One of the things I found, that helped the durability of the blades in the front spool, was to pre-bend the blades.

I would take a drive pin the length of the one that goes into the out drive. Put the blade on the pin like it would normally look, then I would take a pair of pliers and hold the pin and blade so that it would put a slight closing pressure on the blade. Then I would heat it up with a lighter just enough so it would hold the shape and when released from the pliers the blade would hold the shape and be even with the pin length.

This makes more of the blade sit in the spool so there is more material for the pin to push on the out drive plunge face. This really slowed down the amount of blades I was going threw. They still wear out but not as fast.

I think we have two "problems" that work together. When surface of the aluspool where the blades are sitting starts to wear the process of going through blades starts to accelerate. That part is better on the new out drives. I buy blades by truck loads

what is the aftermarket spoot set-up on serpents website? is that a beefier design?

trouble is I run punishing mod races outdoors, need bullet-proof spool like a TC7 or Xray. Otherwise I love the Serp

The new spool is a 3 piece unit, the center section, and the replaceable aluminum outdrives. They still require blades. The older spools where one piece aluminum and you could not replace the out drives, the whole unit needs to be replaced if damaged. The first gen serpent had a similar spool to this but used steel outdrives and ran on the pins only. These outdrives where/are very rare if they can be found but should work with the original center section or the new one. (same lock pin location)

Is there a whole different brand car that you could drop in their spool?

On the 4.0 this is normal. If you check out yokomo shocks you'll see the same thing.

I know serpent is working on a new blade material that should solve all the issues.

Just put some Amsoil 5% moly grease between the blades and the outdrives, and durability will improve....
