Anyone raced one yet? How do they perform?

Pretty sure I'll soon be having one to try to replace my above average running X1 and my now strong running TRF 101W/101/101 carbon front ended project. :sneaky: Currently back to the X1 for this weekend's race at Tamiya Aliso Viejo since it is an automatic go to chassis, throw it down and drive it hard, no surprises. If the 102 is close to or better, then it's gonna be dangerous |
Ive had one outing with mine and it got off to a good start but was still more than .5s/lap off my older t-bar car. Forward traction was better on the 102 but it was also less stable mid corner with a springy snap reaction in transitional sections. With only 3 runs on the car its hard to tell exactly how it will stack up to the proven GP and X1 platforms but initial testing is favorable. The one fault I can confirm is the thinner chassis flexes too much even on low grip conditions. I was able to cure the inconsistent springy transitional problems by replacing the chassis plate with a fiberglass 104 chassis to stiffen it up. A long upper deck to alter chassis flex would be a great option should they release it.

What center spring are you using? Something a heavier spring locks a link car down mid corner...you might get the same effect here.
ps I watch his TRF102 around the track and it is much better than his GP |
Rob,
I tried a soft blue and the kit silver spring (feels like a hard yelow). I will do some more running this weekend, I havent spent enough time with the car yet to determine if it will be better worse or comparable to the GP in any or all conditions. Compared to my proven car it is showing potential but not there yet. This weekend I will try to solve the transitional snap back with the stock plate. I'm thinking if I can slow the initial flex reaction the chicane and s-turns will stabilize putting the car on pace with my GP. The track I am running on is more of a parade grip level, who knows maybe the chassis unloading will help the car rotate in real race grip conditions as much as it hurts it here. For anyone building the kit now thinking that tamiya heavy grease the manual calls for is crazy just start with it, the new plunger requires heavier grease than the old. Heavy in the new tube is a close to medium in the old and soft now feels like 7K used to. |

The williams livery looks great (apart from the Hatch stickers - they are a competitor) are they tamiya stickers or third party?
I'm moving to Canberra later this year - I assume the F1 scene is quite buoyant? |

Finished mine, front upper arms were cracked at the rrear mounting point, near rear of servo.
Noticed it while i was finishing/sanding mould flashings.... Will still use it next weekend, will buy a spare arm set... Looks like the F104 arms fit... :confused:Don't know, never had one... |
Just got my kit and there was a second set of front end parts with the mold sprue still attached right where the previous poster cracked the upper arms. The instruction addendum said to leave some of the sprue on the arms to prevent cracking...
Looks like the arms are just a hard version of the F104 arms, it should fit no problem. |
Put mine together today. Build was good. When I installed the kit silver spring It had to much tension even with threaded spring retainer all the way loosened. Tamiya 101 springs were to soft but found a stiffer but smaller spring that I think is going to work. Looking forward to trying it on Sunday. So you guys are saying that the thinner t-plate is too soft? The harder one feels like just a stiff board.

I had a weird issue building the front, the Ride R1 wheels/tyres didn't fit, the king pin touching the wheel. Eventually finding the king pin is 1 mm longer than the F104 ones. No problem with them.
