Tamiya TRF419

Hi all,
Just an info that back on the top again with 419x
! The car is still excellent...4 wins out of 4 on this series. Decent TQ and not an easy win overall due to a big crash in 1st final which happened accidently.. c-hub, wheel broke...
Car is equipped with floating servo, works well
! The carbon link is not tested yet, since traction is not high enough ;(...
Cheers

Hi guys.
Really get used to my 419 now and its starting to perform well.
One question I have is about roll centres.
I bought the car second hand and on the rear its running xa blocks and 1e. However for some reason there is a tinu shim under all the blocks front and rear.
Should I ditch these and tune my roll centres from the camber links?
Non of the setup sheets I've read have any spacers under the blocks..

I have done the above when running on a high grip black carpet track. It helped free up the car and also reduced its tendency to raise the inner wheel on a couple of tight infield corners.
I would remove them for the average uk club carpet.
Marcika, great results. Be great to see your set-up.

Shims underneath the blocks will raise the roll centre more dramatically than changing the upper bulkhead shims.

What would be a good base setup for low grip and high grip carpet? A setup for each I mean.
Currently running 1mm inner rear and 3mm outer rear.
2mm inner front and 1mm outer front
I have a feeling my car is your old car. Did you sell it to ratmat?

Race report.
Hi,
as requested pls see attached final setup over the weekend as well as track picture.
Some note:
- carpet is grey and both buggies and onroad cars use it, usually first 30-45 minutes for onroad (4-5 groups) and buggy so traction is changing
- traction overall low due to lower amount of cars were registered this time vs last races (each run every hour, instead 1.5hours) so a bit of hurry
About settings:
- base setting was pretty much similar which I used as starting point, however car didnt like it first time.
o floating servo was not changed during the race, it is considered as base, but shims 7mm on each arms
o torque link between motor and servo attached (aluminium version with cap)
o damper oil 450 (no test with 400)
So changes and impact:
1. springs:
a. changed front to 2.5-2.7 (SMJ yellow) to have more traction and car were understeering
b. changed rear to 2.6 (xray) to have more stable end
2. droop: moved from 6.5/5.5 to 6-5 to have more traction overall (measured under the arm!)
3. reduced gear differential from 7k to 5k, car was too push and hard to drive (rear was not that stable) car spinned sometime
Based on above the car was getting faster, but still cornering was not that ideal I wanted.
4. added +0.5 shims – so overall 1mm shims – under upper arm spacer (front only) I tried rear as well but didnt help to stablize the car. I used „O” shims, since I didnt have the custom one.
5. I have added also 0.5m shims under rear upper arm (3.5m overall) to increase traction in reat.
All of above resulted to be the quickest again on best lap (by 0.1mp ~ 15.2) and overall 2 mp against 2nd (T4’16), 3-4mp against 3rd (BD8), who are multiple local champions :-).
I also tried gear diff with 2m oil in the front for 3rd qualifying and for the first race.
Car was much easier to drive in the long corners but on braking it was not that quick (end of the straight) I wanted. So during the first race I lost as a result of it. First laps were very slow so the 2nd was way close on me... despite the fact during qualifying I took 2mp „gain” over second.
Unfortunately there was an accident in the last corner before the straight which I wanted to avoid and hit something which was out from the wall (not visible) a bit which destroyed completely the left of my car, including wheel, C-Hub...body...
2nd race was OK, put back fix in the front and rebuild the car as quick as I could under time pressure...the „new” wheel on left front needed to „break in”, which caused some headache in first laps... 2nd with xray took over me which I was not able to recover. The car become very fast for the last 8 laps..
Before the 3rd run I had only option to win if I win and with best overall time. (results after 2 finals: 2nd had 1-2, 3rd had 1-3, I had DNS – 2)
For the 3rd race, car become excellent (I also found rear of the car „changed a bit” as a result of crash which I didnt have time to check in details before the 2nd final but 3rd final I did full revisit). I added also 2nd screw in the center, which I always did in the past for the 3rd race when traction was getting higher (not high but higher).
I was also lucky since 2nd/3rd fought a lot... which helped me to get some „gain”... car become excellent again.... it was „easy” win under big pressure to beat the time. I got 1.2mp faster overall during the 5 minutes race from 2nd and took the win. (19 laps over 5 minutes and 2.6mp)
Taking a look back what I would do differently now:
- leave fix in the front all the way long
- try to go down in rear gear diff to 4k oil.
- to test 400 damper oil
Hope it is useful to others. Welcome your comment if settings looks weird, I am still learning... and testing to see if it works.
Not much „technical” knowledge I have, all is basing on experience and other race reports!
