Not too surprising. the Team Powers 21.5 depending on timings looks very much like the R1 21.5 at 30 degrees on the dyno.

Took home first yesterday with my 17.5. I was geared at 3.8 and timed at 37degrees. I made a last minute change and decided to use my new 2015 ARC for the main. I didn't have my fastest motor installed but it still was very capable of winning. Since we started doing teching to the top three cars. It has finally eliminated the reason for the cheaters to cheat. Hands down a R1 motor off the shelf is the fastest legal motor out there that I've tried. It was pulled out and tested to be the best number reading motor out of the bunch.

Even though it was a rookie class that my son ran his R1 in. But it was a stacked rookie class, a couple of them were running good enough time for sportman class. He qualified mid pack, but by the main everything just came together. End up winning the race. The motor has good power everywhere, never faded. It has a lot more potential for sure. The final set up was 100/46 25* medium size asphalt. Anyone on the fence should give this a try, you won't be disappointed

Tried an R1 Wurks 17.5 in my RB6 today in place of the Tekin Redline Gen2 that was in there.

Impression so far is fairly meh. Not a slow motor, but didn't seem to have the punch of the Tekin either. Still early days though. I need to play with gearing and timing a bit more. Tried it geared conservatively at 5.7:1 with 25 degrees timing and it still came off the track at close to 70C or 160F so didn't go up in gearing (Tekin was geared at 4.9:1 and was coming off at 60C - with more punch). Didn't notice any more top-end than the Tekin either.

Should I gear it up and reduce timing?

Buggy is 1500g. Any recommendations for gearing / timing on a medium size outdoor track?

You should try posting this in the offroad R1 Wurks thread. Ive heard they have great success with them in buggys.

I would. Start at your last FDR (4.9) and 15 degrees of timing. Run for three minutes and check temps.

If it's too hot, I'd reduce the timing 5 degrees and recheck.

If it's not warm enough and still slow, I'd gear up two teeth.

Post back your results. Some of us go both ways and race dirt and pavement.

Sent a message to the R1 Gods a few days ago, no word yet. Anyone here have an idea when they will be restocked?

I just ordered my R1 21.5 , for our VTA , blinky class . Does 4.0 FDR and 30 degrees of timing for a 80x36 foot carpet track , sound like a reasonable starting point ? thanks .

You might want to try 3.5 and lower fdr and 30* is always a good starting point.
