That track looks great,

Been loving my 418. Managed to win a local club championship ahead of the Yoks and X-rays (the only TRF418 there).

It's indoor and carpet (17.5) the car is so consistent and easy to drive fast, it's my favourite TRF since the 415msx.

What track do you race at?

First race on the 418 Saturday. It felt stiff at first so I removed the top deck motor mount screw and it was way better. The chassis had more grip after without changing any other setup(stock settings from manual). Large parking lot track with 175' strait.

How much thread lock do you guys use when building?

The last car I build with so much carbon/metal and metal/metal interfaces was a 1/8th has car. Used to need to use it EVERYWHERE!

And on threads, titanium v aluminium - thoughts? I notice the pros use a mix, but it's inconsistent where and when. I had been told the Aluminium ones are not as good when screw into metal and definite no go for al-al pieces. But plenty of builds I've looked at seem to buck that trend.

But also screws should be a fail (shear) point, so there must be some strategy to their use.

At the moment I've got enough Ti screw lying about to do the whole thing.

Shouldn't need any thread lock, as was said before just check them every so often when practicing or racing.
As for screws, I use a mix of Ti and Alu. On the lower deck all screws into the bulkheads, suspension blocks, and motor mounts etc are Ti. The only Alu screws I used on the lower deck are the 3 that hold on the front bumper mount. I also use Ti screws to attach the upper bulkheads and the damper uprights, for the top deck I used Alu screws. I seem to recall getting this formula from somewhere on here.

Norcal Hobbies in San jose CA. It's just a parking lot track set up twice a month. They have a permanent off-road track indoors.

Where are the US based TRF drivers? How come they are not giving us their input on this thread.

anybody try the Smokem racing super short shock tower with Tamiya damper 42273 ?

Raman 03-25-2014 11:21 AM

Bill McEuen, Jerry Wright and Jay Williams all frequent rctech. Would be nice to have them give some input on the car. Jay did post a set up a few pages back.. That's about it

No offense to any of the US TRF drivers, but we just don't have a high caliber driver like Herbert or Lemieux. So I’m not sure how much support you would want anyway. We need David Jun to come out of retirement. :D

FYI: David Jun no longer works at Tamiya.

Sorry, I do not really do any on-road. My most current TC is a 416 worlds, not sure I would be much help.

No problem Bill. It would good for some of your colleagues to give input on this thread as to what Tamiya is doing to address some of the challenges with the TRF418. It seems the car is doing well at club races but a lot of people also follow how the drivers are doing and when they see that they are struggling... raises questions about the new chassis.
