Alright guys, I just finished my TT-02 kit (1999 Subaru Rally Car) and it’s a lot slower than I thought it would be. Here’s the specs:

HobbyWing Justock 17.5T G2.1 Brushless Motor
HobbyWing Justock XR10 Brushless ESC
2S LiPo

Only parts I upgraded from the kit were bearings and oil filled shocks. What can I do to make this thing fast?

buy the high speed gear set and pick up yeah racing motor mount. Then you can run an 82t 64pitch spur with 40-48t pinion. If you want to go extreme you can do 70t with 53t pinion. You will have to shave off the gear cover to clear the pinion.

What 70T spur and 53T pinion can I use that fits the high speed gear set? I do not race this car at a track so I have no restrictions, just trying to make it a fun fast car

Arrowmax 664070 (Spur gear)
Arrowmax 364053 (pinion gear)
These will fit, but many other brands also.

Most 64pitch spur gears with a 4-hole pattern should work with the high speed mount. Some gears only have a 6-hole pattern, which may still work only with 2 screws instead of 4. 2 screws should be ok for a low power motor like a 17.5t. Pinion gears must suit a 1/8" or 3.175mm shaft, which just about all 64pitch pinions will be. Arrowmax and RW Racing make good quality gears.

With an 82t 64pitch spur, pinions larger than 44t or 45t will not fit under the unmodified gear cover in my experience. I would get a 82t and 44t to start with, which should get you going somewhere around 24mph on a 17.5t motor and 2S battery.

I have run down to a 69t spur and 60t pinion in my TT02 which required a lot of the gear cover to be cut away. This would get you around 35mph on a 17.5t motor. Motor might get too hot with these gears unless you run only on smooth concrete/asphalt, keep the speeds up and/or have a decent motor cooling fan.

Additionally, consider using a 3S battery which your motor/ESC should support but watch those temperatures! Speeds should increase approximately 50% when you swap a 2S battery for 3S. Heat from the ESC/motor will increase 100%.

I’m curious if I should ditch the motor. I hate to since it’s brand new, but I can’t get over how a lot this thing is. Do you think I could run the 70/53 spur/pinion combo with 3S and be safe from overheating?

I would not advise running with a 3S lipo in this chassis....unless you want parts to start failing.... This is a basic car, as such has already some pretty serious limitations. Not to mention perhaps previous poster should have mentioned HW recommending to upgrade the Fan to the 12V version prior to attempting to run 3S on that setup.

Nope!! That gearing is for 2S. Try running it first with that gearing and you will see it’s plenty quick.. and become acquainted with it.

3S is simply asking for disaster

considering on building my tt02rr this week. what have you guys used to replace the tapping screws that came with the kit? i see on amazon i can get m3 button head kits with various sizes. does the material matter at all? i just really dislike philips head. hex is where its at! love to hear your thoughts. i did see some titanium, stainless, and 10.9 grade steel alloy. what are also the advantages?

I picked up my 70T spur gear and the high speed gearing set, but the mount will not fit flush in the spur (diameters seem to be identical).

What can I do? I’ve applied quite a bit of force with no luck
