Does anyone know if we will see the HPI Vintage tires again?

Right now it’s like running drift tires and they will not work for us.
You have to soak them in liquid wrench (the blue labeled one) and put them in a bag overnight. It will help tremendously.

I just wrote to HPI and got this info on when they would have tires:

"I believe we have had a delivery around 6 weeks ago. It seems like the went out again straight away. The next delivery is due to take place in 3-4 weeks."

Does anyone remember the HPI tires being in stock 6 weeks ago? I sure don't.

Well even if HPI vintage tires are produced again they have aready been Deemed Illegal, So you can't use them anyway. Then you would be a part of The Outlaw VTA Racers

Glennhl,
I heard the exact same thing from HPI nearly a year ago. I don't put much faith in what they say. As LoneDrifter said, not legal at sanctioned races and many club races anymore.

Thanks for the info. I'm surprised that they outlawed the HPI tires. I guess they want a level playing field. I just wish Protoform would try and find a tire compound that worked better on asphalt.

We can all try to email protoform asking for an asphalt tire and just maybe they will hear us.

A softer, asphalt compound would be nice.

But in the meantime, the current PF tires CAN be made to work on asphalt. This our track in Easley, SC . The asphalt is untreated and we aren't saucing the tires. We've worked at making setup changes in order to get the tires to work.

I keep hearing that the tires are 'impossible to drive' and 'like drift tires'. I can assure you that is not the case. We are WFO through the banked turns and there's plenty of traction in the infield sections.

Watch the video of our last race and judge for yourself. Cars are NOT spinning out everywhere and there's plenty of good racing going on. Since everyone is on the same tire, I don't really see an issue. Better driving is rewarded.

Protoform will never make another compound for a VTA tire even if 51% of the racers want it. I can't see the people who make the rules for USVTA approving a second compound for VTA either that why the Hpi tires are Illegal.
I'll see myself I guess how the PF tires work on asphalt , If they are hard to break in for asphalt and don't perform I'll just race GT and other things instead.

I’ve just started trying the Protoform Tires. In case we run VTA. Little slick but I’m on cold, unprepared pavement. I’ll have a correct body next time.

I did try them on concrete. Lots of grip there.

We are having no problems on asphalt prepped with VHT. We soak the tires in liquid wrench the night before. Just like Josh explained.
Here’s a video of my wife’s race.

Personally I feel the PF tires will kill the class on asphalt!!
We’re going to try some of the suggestions from others, but I’ve already been told by racers that they will quit the class because of the tires!!
We have run USVTA at our track since we opened, and need a better compound then what we have now. I’ll let my guys run TC tires if needed.

After you try some of the "suggestions from others" you will be astounded by the difference it makes. I used one of the methods for my PF's that I run on carpet and it was a total transformation. Adding to the list of things to try is to heat the tires with a flame through several cycles. I haven't done it but fellow racers have had good results.

When I received my PF .. I followed a suggestion to soak them in pb blaster. I left them in there overnight to find them completely deformed the next day.

I went out and bought a new set and used SXT 2.0 to soften them and use SXT 3.0 on the track.

I used the deformed ones to prop off my cars on the shelf.

I looked at them recently and they went back to their normal shapes lol. I guess whatever petroleum product that was in PB Blaster evaporated.
