Hello Mark, I was reading up on this & thought I would throw this out there.
I just purchased a remanufactured Boss 25.5 motor directly from Novak. I needed to install a 21.5 stator for a local class & when I opened it, it came with a smco rotor.
Just a heads up on how they may be showing up in motors.

I'd be interested in hearing about a back to back test with the 'normal' 12.3 rotor and SmCo rotor. Report back with anything you find?

Just so you know, I did not buy the new motor. I bought the $75 re-maned motor. I don't know about the new motors.
It still should not happen if they are not legal.
Just to make sure I am right I will take the motor apart & post a picture

Yep, that's a SmCo rotor. I personally don't think they are an advantage.
According to the rules, only 12.3mm rotors are allowed. No tuning rotors, only stock Novak rotors.
Would this be considered a 'stock Novak rotor'? It is 12.3mm, is a Novak rotor, and came in a re-manufactured motor from the factory.

My understanding was Novak created SmCo rotors because China announced they were closing & or limiting the mining of Neo material. It would have driven the price of rotors to around $130 to $150 each. It put a stop to it. At least that is the rumor I heard.
I have legal 12.3 rotors that I can use to compare & an I Guass. I will check them on the I Guass this week.

I recently tested both....one of my motors had a smco in it and I was totaly unaware of. The motor was put together in early 2010?...and only been apart 2 times...2012 and 2014 Snowbirds....but tech noticed it at the Summit Indoor Nationals. I tried 4 different rotors in the same can/stator and saw almost the same numbers....this checking RPM/KV/Amp...
The only thing I can think of that may give it an advantage is it maybe cooler....I might give that a try Wednesday to see if any temps come into play.
FYI...even the small difference between them....the NEO was the best of the bunch...

One of my hobby shop buddies in Shanghai is clearing out his warehouse to move to a different location. He's just discovered about 30 of the discontinued Plymouth Cuda bodies (HPI17510).
Do you guys think there is still a market for these in the US? I'm guessing it would be about $40 a piece to get to your door, but really have no idea.

Novak answered me today. They apologized & let me know they are aware that some SmCo rotors got in some motors & are sending me a replacement Neo rotor. As before I have had excellent cust service.
I guess it was fortunate I ordered directly from them.
When it comes in I will compare them on the IGuass
