I just bought the steel outdrives for my electric TC4. Im doing this as a replacement of the plastic ones because they break on me alot. Now these outdrives are completely different. They are them same size but the lock nut that holds the thrust screw in wont fit in the short outdrive because it doesnt have the mold where it holds it in. What do I use as a lock nut to hold the diff together?

the lock nut is different then the one used in the plastic diffs. also the spring and lock nut goes on the long half. I would suggest down loading a tc3 manuel off the ascocoiated web site so yopu get a pic of the steel diff

You need a t nut. the nut is molded into a piece of plastic that sits in the slots instead of fitting inside the outdrive end. Ask at your LHS they will know what ya need Its PN 6575

speedie, I have this T-nut, I should have mentioned this before. It came with my nitro.

Now my question is, where do I put the spring, thrust assembaly and the tnut. (which outdrives?)

Spring and T-nut go in the short outdrive, thrust assy and bolt got in the long side.

You will also need different diff rings for the steel outdrives, I think. If you get the rebuild kit you'll definitely have everything you need.

Unless things have changed, which the may have, you will need different bearings too.

I have all the things I need to run the steel outdrives.

1 MAJOR problem: The diff rings that go on the outdrives are too small. This causes the diffs not to close properly. Im using the diff rings that came with my NTC3. Im gonna take a trip to my LHS and see if they have the proper diff rings.

Im pretty sure that they go in the long half because it wouldn't fit inside the short one.

The spring / t-nut go on the longer side, the trust balls go on the hsorter side (this works the best).

As for the rings, the ntc3 round ones should work just fine, the diff not "closing" enough is most likely due to the bearings being too wide, i always found using more narrow bearings to be helpfull.

Rcracingkid, my NTC3 diff rings dont fit on the outdrives at all. They dont even go around the small circle on the outdrive. This causes a gap in between the diff gears and the outdrive which makes it impossible to screw in the thrust assembaly screw into the T-nut.

Ok guys, I figured out the problem. The diff didnt close right because I was using the NTC3 rings which looked like they fit in the outdrives but they didnt seat correctly.
