I have the works shocks for the 417 what exactly would I need to make them into short shocks? And could I use the stock shock towers or would I need to buy some Raceberry short shock towers?

How do you like the feel VS the original length TRF works shocks. With the works shocks do I just need shock bodies and shock shafts or is that just going to cost as much as buying the TRF works short shocks??

Another question that I have is that the short M shocks are they good for asphalt cause that's what I would be running on, or are the regular work shocks better for asphalt.

Tim M shocks will work on Low profile shock mounts and the will work just fine. If you don't need Tamiya specific you could try these:

Hello guys, I would like a base set up for a 417X on a parking lot track approximately 100ft by 50ft prepped with grape soda and sugar.
I am relatively inexperienced in touring car set up terminology and what all the changes do. Is there somewhere I can read that explains what changes do and how they change the car in simple terms?

I am presently running a boosted 17.5 but there are no motor restrictions. I am not lacking speed, but handling. I have almost no on power steering.
I purchased the car used and I did not change anything. I plan to take the car apart and set it back up so I know what I have.
Jaco blues are the hot tire and I do prep tires with traction compound.
I have several pairs of HPI blues and silvers, the kit Tamiya springs and the touring car soft set. I should have a good selection.

Thanks

I would suggest Petit RC see if one of these setups would help you. We race on a parking lot track we use Coke syrup but the track is super grippy I copied one of the guy's here setup and after he looked at my car last week the car has on power steering an is really fast! IMHO Try Sorex 32 or a Sorex 34 depending on temps

First off I have to say thanks, I've been reading through this discussion for a little while now and I've learned a lot. I'm just getting into racing and decided to (hopefully not foolishly) start off with a high end kit rather than going through kit after kit wasting money along the way. I just built the TRF417 kit with the Diff II and I have a few questions.
I switched out the Spur gear for a Kimbrough Precision 90T 64 pitch (KIM228) and a Robinson Racing Aluminum Pinion 45T 64 Pitch (RRP4345). This I read would give me a 3.88 ratio which would be ideal with the 17.5 Tekin motor I was planning on using. From a suggestion I read on here I had to drill out two holes in the Spur to get the pulleys to attach to it. The issue is i'm getting gear noise and I've tried adjusting the gap between them from tight to pretty wide and I still get the gear noise. Is this an issue with my gear choices, using a combination of metal pinion and plastic spur, or is it even an issue at all?
I'll be running the car on carpet (hopefully really soon) at an indoor track, then I'm sure I'll have all sorts of set up questions.

I've already noticed some Diff Oil leaking so I took it out tonight and tightened the screws further. I've read a lot of different rebuild options but wanted to get another consensus here, it sounds like everyone uses the Kyosho "O" rings but does everyone switch to metal gears or stick with the plastic? If you switch to metal does this mean using grease instead of oil in the Diff? Also where do you get the metal parts and the paper gaskets?

I'll leave it to those questions for now so as not to overload this post. LOL

I was reviewing the set up sheet you linked and I didn't see a droop setting.
Is there a kit of spacers I can order? Part number please.
Also, what would 500 wt shock fluid be in standard 40-50 wt oil?

Where can I find touring car set ups for dummies?
