when the cord's show.you can see that the car doesnt seem to grip over time but most have good traction untill the cords show

there are cords in the tire just like the steal belts of a full size car.what tire are you using

Normally only belted tires have "cords", most non-belted there's no easy way to tell. I usually pinch the tire with my fingers to see how thin the rubber is, if it's really thin then that means it's time to replace them.

Cords, threads, whatever. When you something other than rubber, you're going to want to replace them.

I don't think all tires are belted. Provided your inside foam isn't shot pushing on the center you can feel if paper thin. You can check your wear to see if your even across face of tire with tire paint marker or your chaulk or even finger nail polish. Just run your track and look at the lines across face of tire and see if it is even.

In simple terms the more runs the more worn... Each run takes a layer of rubber away making it thinner which has two consequences... The thinner rubber does not follow the surface in the same way which reduces the grip and also it has less material to absorb heat so it is more prone to over heating with further loss of grip...

Generally though none of this matters for anything other than events. If your tires still work ok then they are fine for clubbies unless you have plenty of $$ to throw around.

I have (Sorex, MM, Sweep etc) that may look unworn, but are unusable as they no longer grip. Just too old perhaps ??. I guess there's a reason why I was given 6 sets of used tyres when I bought my car.

If not stored correctly the rubber will lose its attributes after some time. Therefore they should be stored in a airtight bag and should be cleaned with brake cleaner after use. Therefore they life much longer.
