Dear Jeff, doesn't the picture proved the potential problem of the casing??? Maybe yours come perfectly fine and soaking your bearings solve all the binding problem. But there are still some users have this kind of problem. I was surfing through the web and found these pictures. This is why I put it in here. This is just a way to solve it and help build better car.

Look folks... this has all been gone over in the 100s of
posts on the original EvoIII thread, concentrated to:

1) "problem" is largely caused by builders cranking down hard
on the gearbox screws, warping the plastic & stripping threads.
Gears go out of mesh, they start binding.

Replace the 3 screws with machine-threads, longer ones are better.
If you only just snug the screws tight, you have no problems.
I have tried 8 different gearboxes (5 cars) and its the surefire solution.

2) various ways have been tried to cure oneway gear stripping,
from shimming the diff to padding the bevels' bearings tight to
the gearcase. Later was the discover that the shaft is 2mm short,
Tamiya issues a new TB02 shaft and Tech has a 3-piece stick.

Gear stripping, although not preferred per se, does not leave your
car stranded mid-race & DNF. Removing & changing the gear is a
2 min job if you can be bothered, otherwise just live with the
clicking & leave till your next rebuild.



I love the EvoIII design, still admire it every time one's on the
bench even though amazingly it is now over a year old.

Tamiya did a great job and it will be a hard act to follow.

Like all, wonder what more EvoIV can offer.

Why would Tamiya stop charging through the roof prices if there customers complain all then just buy the product anyways?

Hopefully it will be cheaper to purchase and maintain like the Evo3 is compared to the 415 (which in some stores is the price $415.00!!)

The big kicker is when you buy replacement parts then you get the real hit.

The main problem is that Tech Racing is involved and unfortunately this drives the price up not down also the Yen situation isn't the greatest.

If only I could find the gear that needs to be replaced. It sucks when you call Tamiya and they're even out of stock........

Try using the Pro-4 gear...boil it and use one of those alluminum support plates I've seen on here....Or try using a one-way diff gear from another Tamiya car
