Default Top speed of a 17.5 car?

Yes I know I'm essentially asking what a typical 7 yrs old asks, but I got into an argument with my cousin and I couldn't help it. Can a 17.5 TC, in ROAR legal configuration, hit 40mph?

Reason I'm asking, my cousin apparently got the onboard speedometer thingy from Venom and claims that his 17.5 TC (it was either Cyclone S or Xray T2R, I'm not sure) was clocked at 40mph (65km actually). I told him that there is no way a 17.5 TC is reaching that kind of speed and given that a 17.5 motor is only about 2200kV or so he is lucky to see 30mph. Then he told me that with the latest speedos that advance timing, and with the additional timing he can dial in via the turbo feature on his Tekin RS, it is entirely possible for a 17.5 car to reach 40mph and that his speedo is indeed correct.

What do you guys think? Has anyone ever put a radar gun to a 17.5 car? I still don't believe it but there is some validity in his claims I think. He did admit that the track had a long 180ft straightway and his car was geared tall at 3.7 FDR or so.

Its not very scientific, but cars on my road normally drive 35-40 and I chase them down with my 17.5 rcgt car when I'm bored

IF you were to gear it for just a top speed run, then I would say yes. But I doubt it could happen on a track geared for a 5-6 min race.

My local track's straight is 160' long and thats big for most electric tracks. Eariler this year Randy Pike of tekin came out and tested with another local tekin driver with a 13.5, I was out there with my SPX. We had a rader gun sitting at the end of the straight.

The highest topspeed any of us could get was 38mph and as I sayed that was with a 13.5 and advanced timing speedos.

That's what I thought. Do you know if the Tekin guys had the turbo feature on? I know it adds speed considerably but even then I doubt a 17.5 can hit 40mph when a 13.5 is struggling to touch it.

I think they were testing early versions of what came out later to be the v200 software. If I remember correctly, to get there car up to 38mph they had to gear the crap out of it and it was over 200d after 5 laps, not really "race" gearing. LOL

+1 - I do the same thing (with an RCGT car), and live on a road where most drivers are going 35ish.

Scotty - 38 MPH 13.5 Fail!

At the Reedy race, the 17.5 radar record goes to Juan Aveytia with his super efficient Tamiya Evo4. It clocked in at 37mph with a 17.5 and that was with race gearing.
My best was a 35mph. Most people were in the 33 range.

Well I guess rader guns are like dynos, you never get the same numbers from different units.

The rader gun we used was a police rader so I would say ours was more accurate then what you used!!!

40mph with 17.5, no problem. We normally hit 34ish on our outdoor track (not using full straight). Maybe higher. Some cars aren't even topped out by the end of the straight. Infact, 34mph was the average for 27t back in the day here. We did this with radar gun at end of straight.

you should be thankful that Juan was not using the "one alligator, two alligator" method that he normally uses.

If that's the same Evo4 his friend used in Vegas, then I'm a believer. That thing was like cheating on the straights. Kinda makes me want to find an Evo5MS for some 17.5 action.
