TAMIYA F103 RM

I built and ran a new TAMIYA F103 RM, and it was very fun and easy to drive. I hope this becomes a TCS regular event.

So I thought maybe we can share tips and setups for this chassis.

Please include pics of you rides.

mild seven 06-26-2008 05:05 PM

just ordered mine from rcmart yesterday. I still have my old f103 from a few years ago but its in a million pieces. I hope they will race F1 in Oz again, such a good class to race in. Hopefully we get the TCS too, we didnt have one last year.

NEWS FLASH WALLY EDMONDS HAS AN F103RM!...He has it painted in Renault ING colors.

Is that the Sauber shell? looks good.

BobbyS 06-26-2008 10:57 PM

Yes, Thanks!, showing a little wear, but it's an original Sauber C12 shell.

energyracing 06-27-2008 05:54 AM

Bobby, how does youre front end compare to the solid one that is included with the "new" F103 RM.

Thanks for the great pics.

The front suspsension looks to be similar, except for the white steering hubs, the f103rx has the ame in blk plastic, and the lower braces look different too. :)

InspGadgt 06-27-2008 01:25 PM

Bobby, the 103RM has the older front suspension on it. Many people racing the 103 went back to that front suspension because it was more consistant. The front end on your car has the active front suspension which has a moving upper suspension arm. The one on the 103RM has non-moving suspension arms and works by the king pin sliding through the arms. It's like comparing the old AE front end to the Dynamic Strut front end.

BobbyS 06-27-2008 02:17 PM

Here's a spring set that's available to tune (stiffen/soften) the active suspension parts for the f103rx/f103gt -> http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=50509

Herc Driver 06-27-2008 07:37 PM

OK I want one too...much better looking than the 201!

InspGadgt 06-27-2008 09:50 PM

The F101 and F102 actually had a different front end from the F103 but it worked the same. The main difference is that it had 4 bolts holding the front end on. The F103RX and the F103GT came with the active front suspension. The difference between the RX and GT front end was the steering knuckles. So the F103, F103RS, F103LM, and F103RM share the same front end.

energyracing 06-28-2008 06:04 AM

Now the question is did anyone notice the difference with the active front suspension. I'm not convinced of it validity since you still cant adjust camber.

BobbyS 06-28-2008 06:13 AM

I haven't noticed any problems with the independent A-arms.

GreaseMonkey 06-28-2008 06:17 AM

I believe that's more to do with the idea of keeping the class as simple as possible rather than it being better.

miza 06-28-2008 07:54 AM

the drive skill is also needed. Not just the power of rc.

BobbyS 06-29-2008 11:23 AM

Here's a link to the f103lm manual, you should be able to find pics and descriptions of what you need inside --> http://www.tamiya.com/japan/download...lm_audir8r.pdf

The 3Racing top deck is made to work with their chassis which does have a spot for additional stands in the front. They also have another which works with one of the servo mounts to use that as the stand but I can't remember which servo mount it is that mounts on both sides.

alphacat 06-29-2008 01:32 PM

I think the front of the upper chassis mounts to the rear holes on the Servo Mount.

InspGadgt 06-29-2008 01:55 PM

Depending which one he has. 3Racing has 2 different style of upper brace. One mounts to the holes on the servo mount and one does not. There's been a couple of different servo mounts that Tamiya has used on the F103 chassis. The one used for the 3Racing upper deck is the 2 sided mount.

sukh 06-29-2008 02:42 PM

its F103GT-12/WO, Graphite rear upper deck plate for tamiya F103GT original chassis, thats what it says on the package.

energyracing 06-29-2008 04:01 PM

Sukh, I believe the upper deck works only with the F103 GT servo mounting braket, the F103 RM, has half the braket, therefore you cant mount it.

In all honesty, it's not needed for outdoors.

sukh 06-29-2008 04:25 PM

George, i know that some guys at fastcats are using a upper deck, just have too see there cars too see how there doing it, not sure if i will be using it out doors anyways, having too much fun with nitro, but you never know!

I think here they are meaning fully independent arms (meaning both arms are articulated) where all these Tamiya front suspensions have at least one fixed arm on the friont. The CRC WGT car has this setup for example http://www.rctech.net/forum/attachme...8&d=1201452257 . Think a 12L5 front suspension, fixed bottom arm, swinging top arm. These are fine I believe.

It's to stop the creation of fully independent front suspenion with shocks etc on the front like touring cars I believe.

InspGadgt 06-29-2008 04:50 PM

Basically outlawing the the HPI front end which was an independant front suspension.

You could if you use the GT servo mount

BobbyS 06-29-2008 06:17 PM

Anyone else have pics of their ride?

energyracing 06-30-2008 09:46 AM

Bobby S. I should have pics up soon on both this forum and on my site (listed below).

BobbyS 06-30-2008 08:36 PM

Nice build, and great paintjob!

mild seven 06-30-2008 08:42 PM

thanks. Wish i knew that there wasnt any protective over spray film lol, got a few spots on the shell

rcdougie 07-01-2008 02:33 PM

Im really interested in this car but would like to know if there is a way to mount standard pan car foam tires on the car. Can it be done? How do the wheels mount on the car? Sweet looking car.

InspGadgt 07-01-2008 03:58 PM

It can be done but it is a bit of a hassle. You'll have to change out the whole rear axle assembly to one from a standard pan car. Then you'll have to change the rear bearings from a metric bearing to a standard bearing and find some way to make them fit correctly. Then in the front you'll have make metric bearings fit in a standard wheel.

rcdougie 07-01-2008 05:48 PM

Thanks for the info
