So, Mini finally goes brushless. Time to get the M03 off the shelf and build the M05 sitting here still in the box.

There are a few of those being run in mini here. Good batteries. Anyone know if Hobbyking has gotten over the international lipo shipping problems yet?

They do fit fine in the M05! The only thing is you have to trim the opening in the removable battery holder part a bit so that the grommet of the battery can go through.
You can always tell when someone shows up with a silver can in their car. The 21.5 cars are quite a bit slower down the long straight than the silver can cars.
I can vouch for this. Swapped a 21.5 Hacker from my TC with about 40 degrees motor timing into my LWB M03 Mini and was getting pulled by a box stock M05 on a long straightaway. I had been running Silver Can in a TCS type format at my Summer home but had an extra Tekin ESC I used instead of the original Tamiya ESC. Decided I might as well put a BL in for racing in a mixed Mini class at my Winter home in AZ. By mixed I mean if it's small it's in the class so that includes 4WD Vaterras. The most recent race even had Spec Touring cars to help make up the class. I got so frustrated I put a 17.5 in with boost and turbo. Got the speed but the Vaterra clobbered me and broke a rear upright. Interestingly when I ran the 17.5 the first time I only had motor timing and really didn't see much speed difference between it and the 21.5. Different motor manufactures as well and I don't know how their KVs compare. Think the Hacker is the better motor and since I now know the 21.5 is legal for TCS ,after coming back to this thread following a few months absence, I'm going back to the 21.5 and I'll work to get more speed out of it. |
Hi all,
I won't be racing my M05 until next year so won't have time to experiment  Has anyone tried kit tyres on the front of an M05 on carpet? I've heard some clubs are using kit tyres with additive on the front and M grips on the rear, this is to help with the twitchy feeling of the M05 on high grip carpet. Anyone tried this? |
Ive tried kit tires in front and s-grip at the rear... both with the hard inserts... worked fine although i think i could have used a little bit more steering for the low speed tight s-curves...

So am I correct in thinking that hard inserts will give the car less grip? |

My testing methods are pretty crude in comparison to yours. We just throw 2 cars down on the track and see which one goes faster. In every instance, the 21.5 was quicker down the straight than a TCS legal Silvercan. Lap times are also quicker with the 21.5...

17 flat was the fastest I went with your silver can Granpa, and that was hustling the mini on clean, tight, no scrub lines...the BL guys were doing that cruising middle of the track.

Not necessarily imho... they're not that hard and minis dont go as fast as touring cars so the dynamics are a bit different. the harder inserts helps the tire retain its shape especially around corners... keeping a fuller, more usable contact patch. Softer inserts might fold "more" during corners giving the tendency for the car to "hook".
It's the 53255 ones right? (60D) Cheers! |
Hi guys,
I have in the packet an unused M03 mechanical speed control. Are they worth anything?? Cheers! |

Is there a hi-torque servo saver in there somewhere ? You'll need one.

Nope, that I still have to pick up along with some paint. I'm still undecided on the Tamiya or Kimbrough one...I guess whatever they have in stock.
I'd be interested to hear how the Kimbrough performs though..... |

Kimbrough! I've got several Tamiya heavy duty models and find they get bound up one way or another, even with mild contact. I use Kimbrough in my 03 as well. Usually L or XL, re drilled/shaved down for proper alignment.

Still selling my Mini Cooper with hop ups if anyone is interested. M05. Pm me.

A question for you :D
So in silvercan form, and on carpet, and experienced driver(s) etc, what would you expect to lap fastest out of an M03, M05 or M06? Just curious and not intending to cause a riot! :p |

M03 vs M05. We've had that debate here several times. The M03 wins most of the TCS races regardless of the track or surface. The TCS series uses a Spec 60D tire. This also may be cause most of the veteran Mini racers prefer the M03. In any case, pick one and stay with it cause they do set up differently.
I've been an advocate for the M03 after building a couple of M05s. Nice car, drives easy, sloppy steering that needs shimming, but it's just a little slow. With the 21.5 B/L motor rule tho, the M05 may warrant a second look for obvious reasons. |

Anyway...subject change... Anyone ever had to change their 500,000wt diff oil in the 3Racing gear diff yet? What colour was it when you opened up the diff? How do you get the old crap out? I'm letting gravity do the cleaning at the moment and the oil is dark grey. Thoughts? Jim |

I'm letting gravity do the cleaning at the moment and the oil is dark grey. Thoughts? Jim
I built my 3 Racing diff with 5000cst and done about 7 or 8 nights racing. It still feels fairly tight but I'm looking to go to 100,000cst in the next few weeks. I've heard of people using the 500,000cst, is that personal choice or does the diff really loosen up over time? |
oil in the diffs will go black, its normal, as for cleaning i wouldnt bother just top it up, unless you plan to change thickness.
as for them getting loose, will be from oil leaking out of the out drives as the spin. no diff is 100% sealed |
No leakage, but it did loosen a little. Most likely I didn't fill it completely when first built.
EDIT: Gravity did a fair job. Woke up this morning to mostly clean parts. Refilling the diff to a slightly higher degree than before, but hopefully not so high as to cause problems. EDIT EDIT: how much do you guys fill them up? Do you go to the pins, as per instructions, or do you go the Paul Lemieux route and fill the whole cavity? |
Jim,
I use 300 000 weight and go to above the pins, but leave a small airgap. I also use lots of green slime on the o rings and gasket. Regards, Calvin. |
Hey! Any Socal racers on here that run Mini? Just lookin to join up with you guys. Thanks!

Yes, a fair amount. Depending on your location, and if you run a Tamiya, TCS Track most Saturdays...
