Well i don't have any friends that race but i may try to get my cousin to start racing with me. right now we both have elec. rustlers w/ BL motors...but they cannot compete w/ buggies so i thought i would give onroad a try.

practice practice practice.
Step Two.
Repeat step one.
Practice is the best thing for anyone. New or old. Just go out to your track, or even in front of your house and drive around. get a feel for the car and how it reacts. learn how to enter the corner correctly, apex the corner at just the right time, and complete the corner at the optimum speed (still working on that
) But above all, just go out and have fun!

Assuming you're on the lower end of the cash spectrum, I'd suggest going with one of those TT01 XB (expert built). It's just like a regular Tamiya TT01, but it comes built with a pre-painted body, electronic speed control, and radio system. It's by far the cheapest way to get into hobby grade onroad r/c. Heck if you keep checking ebay you might be able to get one for a really good price. I just bought one for my brother for $100.
Don't get me wrong. The TA05 is a great car, and if you have the cash and desire then by all means go for it. However, to race around with your friends in a parking lot the TT01 is more than enough.

Would you like to consider a Cyclone S? It is comparative to Tamiya TA05 and a very capable car.

The Cyclone s is a great car but the black version of the cyclone has way more gear with it and is only $249. In talking to you Rustler through a couple of PM's and you really are going to race locally get a TA-05r they can be had for $219 at www.ultimatehobbies.com where you get free shipping. SIR has all the parts you need if you break them plus the guys there can help you with set-up etc. You don't need a fancy servo off the bat so spend you other $200 on a 13.5 novak brushless setup. They race a 13.5 class as well as a stock class. You can get a stock motor if needed for $30 or run silver can for $17. But all of those motor options will run with the Novak ESC and you can get it all under $500. I suggest spending the cash on the "R" version because if you buy the regular version you will spend a ton of $$$ on shocks right off the bat. Just my 2 cents from racing there... It's a great place to race and they really support Tamiya cars.
