I run a hobbywing justock esc and a teken redline gen1 in my buggy....really cheap setup.
I thought... Hrrrmmm I should buy something better, then one of the club amain drivers took my car out, ran a few quick laps to get a feel and then put down a blistering lap (not as fast as his own car but plenty faster than me). He handed it back to me and grinned.
Clearly I dont need to waste my money, I need to practise

EXACTLY I will worry about having top of the line gear that may give me that .3 sec per lap when I don't need a marshal for an entire race, can hit the apex of every corner every time, downside every jump perfectly everytime, etc, etc, etc,

And you are spot on. there are plenty of budget speedo options that are more than competitive at a club level and beyond especially if you are talking blinky where smooth driving is key..
