Tire Tech Talk - Compounds, Wheels, Inserts, Sauce!

One of the things that I have noticed is that Liquid Wrench and WD40 take quite a while to dry. Sometimes more than 15 minutes to dry completely. When this happens during a race day I will wipe the tire down with a towel I have designated for that fluid. I don't run my tires if they are wet with sauce. This usually just causes them to get mucked up with mud/dust etc.
One tip that seems to be working well to make application easier and also in turn causes the tires to dry a little faster is using a dauber top applicator or I would imagine the McKune designes bottles that look like bingo blotters. I like the dauber tops because they are very small and it helps keep from oversaucing.

I studied mechanical engineering and only have a basic knowledge of chemistry, so please take this as just a diary of experience rather than pure fact, what I understand is that the combination of oils and solvents in LW, WD40 and PB Blaster, penetrates the tire and makes it softer and stickier. Same is basically true for most of the tire sauce compounds available.
To really analyze how this works we'd need to know the exact chemical makeup and processing behind each brand of tire as well as the exact chemical makeup of the sauces to really understand how it works. Most "rubber" is at least partially synthetic.
Hope that helps....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEK - Essentially a solvent. Methyl Ethyl based solvents are often found in motor spray and electronic cleaner.

Liquid wrench worked good for me on the clay treaded tires on med/med high grip clay but on SS slicks on a clay/soil track not so much . What worked best on them was actually the FTM red traction compound dint dry to fast and had a slight tacky to them .

Simple green is awesome for cleaning tires and cars. (Simple purple is also awesome for de greasing cars, especially diffs) I've been using it for tires since the 90s. It will cause your tires to be a little more tacky than normal water would, however it WILL NOT be anywhere near the effect of a tire sauce. It's not even close.
