Yes, I agree with the driving and setup being the largest factor.
I won't make the claim my HW will out perform the Tekin or SMC, but it sure as heck stays right with them. And as yours, mine seems to walk people on the straits to. But that may very well just be because I have a lead finger and a traction hooking SCT setup. Either way, you just can't argue that the cheaper HW motors hang right with the high $$$ tekins once you've run one.

I've had both, HW is faster, smoother, more durable, easier on batteries and less on the wallet.

Glad to hear your take on it. I bought mine based on similar reviews. It's done more than good enough for me race after race. As much as I'd like to buy American, I just can't find it in me to pay twice as much for a motor with similar performance, especially considering that my HW has not gave me an ounce of trouble.

I use a hobby wing sct pro esc with a Tekin pro 4 4600 motor. Its a very powerful combo, and i make all of the doubles and triples that my 1/8 makes. I love it personally, but to get the most out of it, you need really good batteries.

Is that a 4 pole motor? If so sounds like it would be pretty fast. I wouldn't bother if its not Sensored though.

Those turnigy are very fast motors but the bearings went out in mine in less than a month and everyone else at my track didn't have much better results which leads me to believe they use cheaper lower quality bearings. BUT they are very fast run cool amazing all around besides the bearings

I would definitely suggest a 2 pole combo! I have ran a thunderpower 4.5T 550 can and orion r10 pro for over a year and half now and will never switch back to a 4 pole. A 2 pole is way smoother than a 4 pole with the same power.

I highly doubt it has the same power as a 4600 pro 4 or a 4700 hobby wing. These trucks aren't exactly light weight, the extra torque of a 4 pole motor helps allot. I'm not sure how you can say they are not smooth either, the power delivery on my setup is smooth as butter, maybe you were using a non Sensored 4 pole setup? Or your batteries couldn't handle the 4 pole setup, they can be rough on lower amperage packs.

Maddog, would you mind posting your esc setup for that combo?
Ive been debating on trying a 2 pole setup, but was always put off by the esc settings for timing and boost and such.
Ive been running 4 pole setups since the Castle 3800 came out, then I went to the Trinity 4800, and now i'm using the HW 4000. Every one of them have been great in their own way. But i'm always open to other suggestions...

Two of my friends and i might be trying the pro 4 hd 4300 motors for next year, looking for more of that 1/8 buggy feel. The pro4 hd motors are a 4 pole 550 can. Should be great for torque and rpm.

I was skeptical at first as well. I ran a tenshock 4600 both sensored and non-sensored. Didn't really see a difference unless you were at a dead stop. It was way too torquey and i would get wheel spin big time even on high bite tracks. With the two pole i can just squeeze the throttle right out of the corner and not worry about wheel spin. I have had no issue indoors or outdoors clearing any jumps. Just like a 4 pole just way smoother. I would not suggest the 4300 as it is way too much motor for this truck. My buddy had one and sold it after a couple weeks even had it turned down to 35 percent in the esc.

That is pretty close to what i am running settings wise. I have more brake added. I have an associated heat sink on the motor and after 8-10 minutes comes off at 140 degrees.
