Default Drill and tap pinion gear

Okay so as the title says I'm trying to drill and tap my pinion gear to mount it on my motor so as to not have the gear come off the shaft again so how can I easily drill and tap it because my typical drill bit in my drill press keep snapping maybe a carbide bit but what about my tapping part

Why do you want to do this again?

Did the threads strip out?

Seems like a lot of work for a $4 part

It sounds like he is trying to drill through the motor shaft.

I don't think that will happen as it is hardened.

Use a good hex driver and it won`t come off .

Drilling the pinion because one set screw doesn't keep the pinion on the motor shaft and on my last pinion before she ate the spur gear had two set screws and never moved

If its moving then you are doing something wrong. Period. A second set screw is not going to do anything for you.

+1

Put a dab of lock-tite on the set screw and make sure its good and tight, it won't move on you, just may be difficult to remove later on down the road.

I would prefer to not use red Loctite on my pinion set screw and the set screw it comes with only has three or three and a half threads grabbing and it has not worked for me with one set screw the last pinion was not hardened

I have always used the blue, never had any issues myself...

So then use blue loctite. The suggestions given on here are correct. If you insist on trying to do what you're asking about, you first MUST make sure you are absolutely centered on the pinion, with it sitting perfectly level. Make a small flat spot with a small milling bit, then drill the flat spot. Start your threads on the slowest speed on your mill, then finish by hand. Normal drilling/tapping rules apply- use lubricant and be patient.

Or, skip all the hassle, clean your threads and use a dab of loctite on the setscrew. Thousands of racers do this without issue, you should be able to do the same.

I used the blue and it didn't solve my problem I'd have the truck flying and then the pinion would loosen up and smash into motor mount and they would not fair well

the only time i've had one come loose was because in a gear changing hurry i mounted it on the round instead of the flat spot..get some blue loc-tite gel..it's awesome...it comes in a twist up tube like chapstick

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc..._&target=shelf

this looks different than what I bought but the same idea, it's not in a toothpaste tube it's more like chapstick

This pinion on this truck is the only one I have ever had issues with none of my other trucks have pinion issues and I don't know why this one does Loctite has let me down and that's what I have resorted to this crude method of drilling another hole

Carbide drill bit and cutting oil if it's a hardened gear. Go slow, and use a drill press.

If this is the only pinion you've ever had a problem with, throw it away and get a Robinson or other name brand gear and be done with it!!!

I've never known anyone in 25+ years of rc racing to have ever needed to do what you seem to want to do to get a pinion gear to stay on the motor shaft.
