Default Standard Foam or Closed Cell

Hello, I will be running on a hard packed, slightly dusty track that generally runs barcodes or double d's in gold compound.

What is really the differnce between standard firm foam and a closed cell insert? How many people out ther run them?

The closed cell insert will generally be firmer than the firmest open cell insert and also won't break down and soften nearly as fast.

Indoor/high-bite = closed cell
Outdoor/dusty/loamy = open cell.
It sounds like your track may fall inbetween so it may be best for you to mount up two sets of the same tires with different inserts and see what works best for you if there is no consensus pick you can get out of the local fast guys.

Sounds kinda weird but Gold compound is for indoor Clay tracks. I would run blue or grean compound with AKA CC. Let the tire and the Foam break in and the tires will come around nicely. Its tough to tell you since we really have no idea of the track but generally CC foam will help keep the car stable but if you need more traction Open cell will grip alittle more but if its high bite it will give too much and the tire will roll over on its self.

Another option is 2 stage foam by PL.
