Cheap power systems
Searched around and couldnt find much on a colective thread on cheap, inexspencive power systems for people on a budget. this is not intended to be a bash thread on brand names. If I could afford a $300 Tekin system I would probably get one...well I can afford one, but when I can find a cheap alternative for 1/3 the price it lets me have enough extra to bring the whole family in this sport so everybody has a car.
I started with a slash 2wd about a year ago, my friend had one and it looked fun. he had the VXL. I was on a tight budget of $200 to get something going. found a roller for $80 and picked up a cheap Leopard power system off of Hobbypartz for $60 ( system motor was DOA) The 60a esc is still working but others I know have lost the esc realy fast so I dont recomend that leopard system or the 60a trackstar frome HK(same thing) The Motor I stuck in my slash was the Tacon 3650 3500kv for $24. wow this motor has been great. http://www.hobbypartz.com/96m24-car-3650-3500.html This can go head to head with the vxl. mate it up with a hobbywing 60a esc and you got yourself a good cheap combo. http://www.hobbypartz.com/ezrun-60a-...-1-10-car.html or hobbyking 60a http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...rog_v2_2_.html which is the same esc for a 1/10 4x4 I have a Jammin scrt10. I do run a novak HV 5.5 sensored motor and for a while I ran a HK 120a esc http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._1_8_1_5_.html Works great on 2s I liked it but it was just huge. Needed something a bit smaller. I put the 120a esc in an 1/8 buggy and it worked great on 4s for about 3 weeks....then poof. It doesnt like 4s...so I cant recomend this if you need a 4s. but if you have the space and only need 2s or 3s its worth the $40....Cant complain about loosing it, hear rumors that it didnt like 4s...only out $40. I am replacing it with the HK 150a for the 1/8 buggy. My buddy has been using this in his for a long time and it has been flawless http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...s_Car_ESC.html Motor in 1/8 buggy http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Inrunner.html killer power on 4s I have no problem power wise keeping up with any nitro or e buggy. Back to my scrt10 I put this hk 100a esc sensored/sensorless http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ESC_1_10_.html Great smooth esc...and small good for up to 3s, never ran it on 3s. the only issue I have had with it is the fan, think I got somthing stuck in the fan and it stopped working, replaced it with a cheap fan and it stopped to. Not the fault of the esc, just me. My buddy has an scrt10 too. he is running this motor in it and its just as fast as my novak 5.5...and stays cool. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Inrunner.html Is this the best motor? No. The best ESC's? No. But they are what I have found that work good...just as good as the name brand in some cases for a fraction of the price. Would I race with this? yes, I might not always win but its not due to my power system...just me behind the wheel. I know many will complain about the cheap stuff and how its failed on them or that there is no support. I have seen more name brand stuff fail at the track and had buddys sending there stuff in to get fixed...so what do you do for the month that your out an esc or a motor? I call this stuff throw a way. Set it up right, keep in in specs and it should last a long time....if and when it fails your not out $150-200, just order up another $40 esc and get it in a few days. So what has everybody else found thats a great deal? Hoping to find more stuff here in the states. |
Well i bought cheap lipos from hobbypartz and hobbyking they never failed me and the chargers also.

Great thread... I have always ordered my stuff through Tower Hobbies.. According to most it is priced "a bit high"... Which I haven't shopped around enough to justify that statement... As of yesterday I made the executive decision to finally go BL with both my Evader trucks... Of course I shopped around on tower's website for about an hour... And had just about decided on a 3900kv Associated BL system for $109.. Since i was doing both trucks this was going to be a $220 purchase.. Then another member on here (cummins_driver) linked me to hobbypartz.com.. Which some of the guys at my local race track had mentioned it to me before... Talk about REASONABLE PRICING!!! Ended up purchasing two 4300kv systems for $140!!! WOW!! Very happy!!
HobbyWing EZRUN Brushless System Combo B2 w/ 35A ESC & 9T@4300KV 3650M Brushless Motor for 1/12,1/10 on-road racing for experienced drivers $70.60 2 $141.20 |
Whatever you can afford the only advantage to buying a big name brand is support and a longer warrenty.

There are some realy good chargers, cheap. Sometimes its a crap shoot and you also need to find a power supply
But I dont know how many times, almost everytime I am in my LHS picking up small replacement parts I see somebody new to the hobby spending way to much on batterys or chargers or motors....I just want to say "wait, Just go home and save yourself $100 and get it online." Hobbypartz can have it to you in 2 days. most of the time |
Well, this was my first order through hobbypartz.com so we will see how they do.. Even if they get those BL systems to me in 2 days, I leave tomorrow for 20 days haha... So my fiancé has "instructions" to set them in the game room (on the shelf) where my cars are until I get home to install... Needless to say I'll be plenty anxious to come home and start tinkering... After I take care of the "usual business" with the fiancé that is.. I'll be gone for twenty days!!! Haha...

I have been thinking about starting one of these threads dedicated to "good cheap stuff" for a while now.I personally have been running the hobbywing speedos for about 3 years now total. Both their sensorless ez-run and the sensored Xerun gear..VERY good stuff for the price.;)Recently I have been doing a little research since i know that Hobbywing manufactures electronics for other companies such as speed passion..well i have found hobbywing produced speedos at an even cheaper price than at Hobbyparts or NitroRCX from a couple sellers on Ebay. One name brand is "Bullistorm"..Bullistorm is selling re-badged sensorless and sensored systems..all hobbywing ata reduced price compared to hobbywing. Also found a seller that is selling the sensored version with a USB link for dirt cheap..I have confirmed with one of his previous customers that this is indeed a hobbywing 60a system and works with both hobbywing and speed passion firmware updates..I will post links to the 2 systems..

That Bullistorm 60A-V2 unit is one that I'm considering purchasing. It will be running a Tacon 11.5T sensorless motor. Does anyone have any experience with these Bullistorm 60A ESC's, either good or bad?
When it comes time to outfit another car, I may have to give these another look. |

keep us informed on that esc:) looks a bit rough on the outside but I am more interested on the inside. Like to know how the boost and turbo work. And how well the usb link works for programing.
