Thanks, what were you running for inner ball stud shims on the rear?

Do you have a setup you can post?

I also race on the carpet and have been using the 8mm mod and works great for me. I am using 7mm of shims in the rear and 5mm up front.

Thanks. prior to using the mod, how did the vehicle feel around the track (assuming you had good amount of shims on the rear already).

Most of the wobble comes from the large .2 shim under the sun gear.

You will find yours have been bent or coned and are no longer flat .

Solution is simple

*ditch the smaller .2 shims on the out drives

*add on top of the your old .2 shim
another brand new .2 shim, then assemble the gears ....

Most of the wobble will go away. The extra shim will be stronger & not cone out as easily..

Thanks WC, I don't care what they say about you! You da man.

I'm having major heat problems with my truck, running a LRP 4.5 550 SC motor with the TC esc and a Orion 90c 5500 lipo. Where should I gear this at? its a smaller indoor track.

Wild Cherry 09-19-2012 09:43 AM

Tim ,

Not sure how small your track is , the gearing range is 11 to 13t for most 4.5 550 motor's...

If its anything like i ran on, it may be that you need a lower Kv motor like a 5.5 . Or, not sure if LRP does this, but maybe a big rotor setup that drops that Kv rating like Novaks high torque on does?

When running on the small indoor carpet track early this year, I went from a 13T pinion down to an 11T pinion with my Tekin 5.5, and a very mild software on my Speed Passion ESC to get temps in control. Track I think is like 50 x 50.

I ran this exact setup outdoors with a 12T pinion. Motor temp was 170-180°F after 8 minutes. I think this motor just runs hot? The manual says not to exceed 195°F for this motor, so maybe these temps are ok for this motor?

I wasn't sure about the LRP SXX TC V2 / X12L 4.5 combo and wanted to try a 4-pole for more torque so...

I switched to a Tekin RX8 / Pro4 4600. This combo has more power and runs cooler (130-140°F)! The only drawback is how fast you drain batteries. After ~9-10 min, I put ~5,000mAh back into the pack.

I don't have the PN, but I'm using some Duratrax 3mm blue spacers 2 plus a 1mm shim =7mm, not quite 8mm ;-)

You might need some minor changes from mine as I'm running the standard ackerman. But give it a try, I love my truck on carpet, people say it looks like a TC going around the track :-)

Hope this helps,, one minor note, this track is always pretty cold, so tire options might be different with a warmer track, here we can't use suburbs or similar.

nice. I will give it a look and compare to what I had initially myself. The springs and oils for the shocks look similar as well positioning. The stiffer front springs really made a difference around the track.

Did you happen to try 7K up front versus lengthening the front ball stud as well as running some shims under the stud? Reason I ask is that when I used 7K up front, I went to I think 5mm under the stud but still stock kody spektrum race setup and it had insane steering but was planted, wonder if we were basically arriving at the same thing in a way?

Definitely though will keep the setup in my box, always good to have something to compare to that works for someone on similar conditions. With the winters up here, the ground can get quite cold where the carpet sits on. Stock AE tires or barcodes in gold compound was popular.

By the way, for those who need really small gears, I did find some from the 8T - 10T range. Could help with gearing those 4.5s on tight tracks. Just search ebay for 32p 5mm and the tooth size "8T", etc.

Hey guys... I had little luck in the search function. How are people installing their rx8's under the belt cover? Or is it easier to just install it where the receiver box is?

Thanks

You need to either trim the belt cover or fan cage on the rx8. I found it easier to just swap sides with the receiver box.
