Best way to strip paint off springs?

Hey guys I'm trying to strip the paint off some springs and I was wondering what is the best way?

I currently have them sitting in Dot4 brake fluid but not sure that will work.

Thanks.
Ethan

I did it once, it was either acetone or paint thinner. I must have sniffed too many fumes, I dont remember.

DRUNKENMASTER 02-10-2011 05:18 PM

Jasko paint remover.

Dougoilman661 02-10-2011 05:58 PM

Wire wheel on a dremel. Only took me 5 minutes for all 4 springs

bigben1165 02-10-2011 06:17 PM

naphtha, paint thinner or acetone will all work.

Wire brush and dremel works great. If you want the color completely gone with minimal effort. Swing by an auto parts store and grab a can of Aircraft Remover. It smells horrible but takes the paint off in maybe 20 seconds.

Do you have to soak them or just the fumes??

bigben1165 02-10-2011 06:24 PM

you need to soak them, not for very long tho. the paint will start to crinkle then rub right off. you can huff the fumes, fun had by all.

Oven cleaner,, non safe for enviro kind. Triple duty. Clean your oven, your paint on metal remover and your nasal cavity cleaner.

Another alternative to striping them is to dye them black. That's what I do to all my springs and they turn out pretty good.

bigben1165 02-11-2011 08:34 AM

what if they are navy blue?

lowroad 02-11-2011 08:39 AM

I'm totally man enough to run pink springs. In the rear, none the less.

Be sure to were proper ppe when using paint remover products. I always wear safety glasses now free and accidental splash of quick dry ca in the eye. That's was scary lol

BuggyKing 02-12-2011 10:37 PM

I use acetone and a wire brush. Or you could use an dull x-acto blade works wonders too but takes a awhile.:nod:;)

What is the point of removing the paint from springs?

littlewack 02-13-2011 09:09 AM

how do you guys tell what spring you're using if they are all stripped...

I always wanted to know this too... I seen a couple of pro drivers cars that had all the paint stripped off. Is there another reason other than not wanting the competitors to know what springs ur running????

morgoth 02-13-2011 09:29 AM

Buy a mugen :D

tc1 02-13-2011 09:34 AM

I would rather someone just look at my car to know what I was running than to ask me and have to make up a lie. But then again, I dont like talking to people either.:sneaky:

after stripping your springs, take your dremel and "mark" them on the end.

one mark = orange
two marks = blue
three marks = green

and so forth

lowroad 02-13-2011 10:09 AM

hysterical.

Jasco paint stripper is Methylene Chloride, it is extremely hazardous.

I don't think it has anything to do with not wanting people to know - I think some people just don't care for the funky colors some springs have. I used to dye my Losi springs with black RIT dye. They looked very cool. Especially with the gold shock shafts. You could scrape the bottom of the spring with an x-acto knife and still see a little bit of the color for reference. Lately, however, I just became too lazy and just run the colors again.

rcdrtrcr 02-14-2011 05:14 PM

put a small piece of tape around one end, dye them black with rit dye then peel tape off and you have a small area with spring color.

It is mainly for looks.. I didn't think red springs would look good on the front of this buggy.. Red doesn't go good with blue and yellow. :D I think I will just end up dyeing the red springs that are supposed to go on the front of this buggy black.

that's what she said

wallnutz684 03-26-2011 12:30 AM

pros only do it for looks....same reasons some anodize there turnbuckles different colors...i strip and polish my springs and also have gold ti turnbuckles...its just about the cool factor...

HotBodiesVe8Boy 03-26-2011 01:21 AM

so what should i use if i want to get rid of the colour right now? like acetone or break fluid or what?

HotBodiesVe8Boy 03-26-2011 07:21 AM

ive got one set of spare springs and wanted to try this out, im using dot 4 break fluid how long do i leave them in it for before i remove them to wire brush the paint off?

HotBodiesVe8Boy 03-27-2011 02:02 AM

dont warry i figured it out, dot4 break fluid doesnt work at all, i used paint thinner and it striped completely in 10 minutes, i also forgot that you shouldnt touch paint thinner :L my hand only looks a little bit red to what it did :(

ben73 03-27-2011 02:54 AM

paint stripper works. its messy though and the paint comes off in clumps

the other issue is with the springs bare they dont look great. I think the black RIT die is a good choice. quicker and easier too

HotBodiesVe8Boy 03-27-2011 05:25 AM

ben can i black rit dye them after i strip the paint off them?

another option is gasket remover comes in spray can no need to touch let it set for 5 min and wipes paint right off!

does anyone know if rit dyeing them will still work after ive stripped the paint off them?

CCristo 03-28-2011 06:50 AM

No, dyeing them only works when the paint hasn't been removed.

Break out the dremel with a polishing wheel and some polishing compound and shine them up.

HotBodiesVe8Boy 03-28-2011 07:27 AM

ok wasnt sure, im gonna de paint all my springs soon, i like the chrome look they give out.
