Hobbywing, Ezrun vs Tekin/Castle 8th scale
#17
I'm going to go this route for a power system for my brushless LST2.
Where are you getting your hobbywing/Ezrun ESCs?
The Hobby City 150 ESC and Turnigy TracStar 150A ESC seems like good choices also.
What is the ETA on the 1/8 scale Viper system?

Have they published any details on the system?

I just throw in my cents with everyone else. I have not used the 1/8th scale systems from Hobbywing, but I can give you a good comparison on 10th and smaller scale setups. I know its not the same, but maybe my input will make you feel better about the purchase.
There is more difference than just price in my opinion.
Hobbywing systems are smoother than any other sensorless I have used, and more user friendly than any other brand I have used. INcluding, Castle, Tekin, Novak and LRP. My guess is that once you try it you might forget about Viper too. My only complaint would be that rookies may have a hard time with the instructions, because they are pretty much useless if you dont already have a good idea of what you are doing. I have one system going over 2 years of every weekend racing without so much as a glitch.

Are all the Hobbywing ones sensorless....?

LOL I was only poking fun about forgetting Viper.
Hobbywing EZRun is sensorless and XERun is sensored. Well, it used to be that way, but I think there is a sensored EZRun out now too. Both will run sensorless motors though.
The newer Hobbywings come in black or blue, their site says they are the same thing. I think the older black ones are different though.

The tacon and velineon performed identically with the only difference being the velineon felt more like it had more torque on the start but didn't carry it's power equally throughout the power band while the Tacon was smoother throughout the powerband. Now that's the 540 size can.
I can't speak for their new 1/8th scale motors.

I run the black Xerun 80a in my RC8e, and it's been real good. I run it hard with a 4s and 2300kv motor and it just runs smooth. No issues at all. I was looking for a cheap way to get into 8th scale electric, and I bought this used combo on ebay for $100 bucks about 8 months ago. It's still going strong. When it's time to upgrade I'm ordering the blue Xerun 150a.

I buy anything I can from Hobbypartz.com, but their selection is not the full lineup. I think Kershaw Designs has the full lineup but I have never ordered form them before.

Are you talking about the green Tacon motors? If so, yes. Youtube it. Jang actually did a comparison of the tacon 3200 vs the Velineon. The findings.

Another possibly noob question is what is the advantage of the higher amp ESC's, are they just able to handle more cells?
