Default Regular Ultima SC vs SC-R

Is there any remarkable benefit to spend more $ on a "R"? Budget issue. I can use the extra to get myself some used electronics. Please adv me if you have the regular?
I am a casual racer, not that hardcore.... Are the stock tires OK?
Thanks...

IMO, no. I prefer the gear diff. I have the RTR and only added velvet shocks and tires.

If you're bashing, then stock tires are decent. I don't expect them to do well on anything other than pavement or carpet though.

My truck started out as a RTR because they didn't sell the kit. My kit had shocks that leaked but if you look through the thread about the truck you will see how to fix it but maybe ones being shipped now don't have this problem. The kit tires worked good for me on medium to low traction tracks where just a fine layer of dust would build up on the track.

To this day I have purchased the following items: ball diff, velvet shocks, motor centering pieces because my budget allowed me to.

I recently picked up the alloy rear suspension blocks for a little bit of bling, but this truck needs nothin (other than shocks that don't leak). If I had the patience to figure out how to rebuild the stock shocks I wouldn't have upgraded those either.

I've replaced a few ball studs, and a stock axle. Other than that this truck is every bit as tough as you would expect a race truck to be, and super competitive.

I started out with the RTR in April since that was all that was available.

I have rebuilt the stock shocks and they are better but not near the Velvet quality, however, at $100 for a set it is a bit much. The Velvets come with the SC-R.

I use a brushless set up so in went the motor centering kit, new top shaft (the stock one was slipping) and motor plate. Again these items come with the SC-R.

I replaced the gear diff with a ball diff again the SC-R wins.

Body, if you like the RTR you're in luck. I'm on my third body now so you'll be buying one regardless.

Tires, the RTR are only used in spec class racing and work rather well. If you intend to race you'll be buying new tires and wheels.

If you like RTR electronics (who does?) then you're good. I like using my nice 2.4GHz system and brushless so out went the stock gear including the marginal servo it came with.

Bottom line is that I would have saved money by getting the SC-R in the first place but it wasn't around. Given a choice now I would go with the kit.

I've got friends who have both and between the shocks, cvd's, and the fact that the RTR steering rack rides on plastic bushings (not even metal bushings) that take a crap fast vs. bearings in the kit. Unless you REALLY need the radio gear, which isn't the best I've seen either, you're better off in the long run to get the kit.

I have never compared the rtr plastic to the kit plastic but the rtr stuff is pretty durable and stiff in my opinion.

Actually the diff balls in the ball diff set are much better than the SC-R kit's balls. For some strange reason Kyosho pacakges their better balls in the diff kit but packages the softer balls in their car kits. Go figure!

The plastic for most of the parts are the same (same part #s) for the RTR and the SC-R.

Basically it will cost about $200 to convert an RTR into a SC-R.
