Default Clay track building / maintaining

Hi,

Our club has a clay surface track. We need to bring clay to the location because the normal soil is loose dirt.

Our current surface is just clay with nothing added to it, and we use the dust we sweep off the track mixed with water to fill the holes. This all seems to work pretty well, but we need to get a new layer on the track because its wearing a bit thin in some spots.

I know some clubs / tracks use bonding agents to make the clay bleu-groove better and to make the clay harder so less holes get made in the surface.

Were not allowed to mix oil / diesel in to the clay, but I know some tracks are using things like salt / wood chips.

So my question is what are you using ( if anything ) and why that product ?

Thanks,
Arjan (a.k.a. Janus)

I've heard that a 70% clay 30% sand combo is a good solution for indoor tracks but I don't know if it's accurate.

You even been to Bremerton Geo? If so please post what day you plan on going so I can stay AWAY!!!

Seriously though, a track near us did exactly what he suggested after getting a bad batch of clay the first time and it's now incredible to drive on.

Good luck!

wet the track and put calcium on it the day before the race.

On my track I found mixing compost in with the dirt at 30 to 40% mix ratio makes a great surface to drive on. Water will soak in bellow the surface. Dust will be heavy and not airborne.Develops a nice hard groove when run in. Only bad thing washes away some over time. I have heard about the calcium treatment but afraid to try it because of rust.

I don't know what OCRC mixes in with their clay, but I know they run 70% Clay and then mix in some other stuff and it's hands down the best track I've driven on for traction and even more important that outright traction, is that it stays more consistent than any other track I've run on. This means, your perfect set up at the beginning of the day will still be the perfect setup at the end of the day and all day long in between. Some tracks differ so much throughout the day that you literally have to use different tires throughout the day or make other changes to the vehicle.

Ok guys,

Thanks for the information

A few years ago we tried mixing sand and clay and for some reason, the clay we get wont mix well with sand. So big clay blocks will come loose and big potholes will emerge.

Anyone on the rust issues of using calcium on a track ?

Sadly we do not have the facilities to water the track.

btw, our track is located in the Netherlands. Just look on youtube, search for MAC Vlijmen (sry can post url's yet)

We have 3 tracks:
- one indoor dirttrack in a horse range, were we hold our 3 race indoor championship
- one permanent outdoor clay track
- a grass track only used as the championship series closer for the Belgium/Dutch nats.

Thanks,
Arjan

I would agree with the Calcium comment. If you check with the people who run BMX Tracks. They frequently use Soiltac to control the surfaces in the USA. Holland has a lot of BMX too and they may be aware of a brand there. Soiltac is a Liquid Copolymer that bonds the surface. I have raced BMX on these surfaces and they blue groove and grip like asphalt. I have not seen this on a RC track yet but I am suggesting it to may.
