Default So my MMM did a magic trick.....

and the ESC went poof......white smoke followed. This is in a Savage Flux.

Was running 3S lipo's and at the beginning, it just died after a jump. Took it home, decided to test it with a couple of 2S to see if it was the batteries and momentarily powered on but white smoke billowed out of the ESC almost instantly.

I'm thinking that 6S is just too much for this unit with the weight it carries. This is only the 2nd time I've run 6S in this RC but I'm thinking it will be the last.

Does Tekin make a good ESC or do I just replace it with another MMM? I dont want to order a Hobbywing as good weather is here now and dont want to wait till Customs decides to clear this for delivery.

Are you using good, high C rated batteries? I know over on the Traxxas forums there was a great thread about the same kind of thing.

I don't remember all the details, but basically if you starve the esc because the batteries can't put out enough amperage it will fry the esc.

Yea I know I can possibly get a warranty replacement, just considering my other options as summer will be over before I know it. Sending something to HPI in the US and getting one back here to Canada could take awhile.

This Savage never came with the 2.4ghz Tx nor the BP diffs.....maybe the ESC is also Castle's older V2 version as I see the latest is V3?
Just grasping, I know.

The batteries are Turnigy, the 3S are 5000Mah, 30C discharge.

I run a 4 and 5S Turnigy's in my buggy, the 4S is a 5000Mah 25C and the 5S is also a 5000Mah but only a 20C. Never been an issue.

This event also screwed up one of the 3 cells. On the balance tap, it only shows 2 cells with voltage at 4.04V's. Plug in the deans, the 3rd cell shows up but at 4.97V. And then (get this), when I attempt to charge, I get an error "No battery connected"!

This is on a Electrifly Triton 2EQ charger.

I'm just saying I've read that the MMM 2200kv combo needs a min 120 amps steady and 150 plus is better, especially with a heavy load like a savage.

That 4s only puts out 125 amps and the 5s 100 amps!

Maybe it's not the problem, just trying to help.

If its a V2 you will definitely get a new replacement.

I don't know how fussy HPI is about warranty, but if you open the case, you should find either a green board or a blue board. V3s use the blue board. I'd be surprised if it was a v2. I thought the Pres of Castle told us that HPI waited until the v3s were available. Traxxas waited longer than that with teh ERBE.

The weight of the Flux has a lot to do with the stress the esc is under - getting that 13lbs up to speed eats a bunch of amps and if the batts are not up to it, you'll see the smoke. The ERBE is over 2lbs lighter than the Flux.

From what I've read, the Tekins are not that much more reliable.

most of the problem is your trying to over horsepower the car running a 2200kv motor in monster truck with 6s (3s x 3s) is just asking for trouble..

Then I guess HPI shouldnt advertise running 6S in the Flux.

Oh well, I got a RMA # and will be sending it in to HPI for their "evaluation".

The V3's are no better anyway, and happily catch fire too

I think most Castle Creations escs are over rated, this is from reading numerous threads, and from my own experience.

If its rated for 6s, the realistic limit is 5s, rated for 3s? run 2s!

Not a good way to make a name for yourself.

I do like magic tricks though!

Yes I've heard that too....I'm thinking because the Savage is that much heavier than my buggy, the system requires capacitive discharge of 120 amps or more.

The 2S batteries for the Flux are 160A and the 3S are(were) 125A.

On the buggy, high speed runs (60mph) in the beginning and consequently I have bent the chassis, dogbones, broke knuckles and few other parts and not one problem with the ESC. Go figure.

While Castle MMM ESC's seem to be the most reliable out there it is still a crap shoot with 1/8th scale ESC's. I had a MMM v3 last one day in a buggy before it shorted and burnt through a trace on the lipo. No smoke but a nice crispy smell coming from the ESC. This was on a small indoor track so the ESC was not under stress.

In my truggy I've had no problems with my MMM v3.

I have had zero problems w/ castle....you know what they say- if it's a pain in the rear, you might be doing it wrong!

So far castle has the best esc on the market- I have Castles and tekins, barring freak mishaps, castles are the toughest out there.

Most reliable I've had are MMP and Spx8.
