Gearing help????
i have slash with the novak havoc 13.5 system in it i am runing a 86 spur and a 18 pinion it dosent seem much faster then stock any info how to make it faster with out smoking the motor ? and what shock oil should i use for racing on a clay track with some decent size jumps i have the integry piggyback shocks for front and rear. they came with 2 springs red and blue no instructions or info so have no clue what to use . thanks guys !

I ran about a 22 or 23 tooth with my 13.5, you really should use a temp gauge to set up your gearing. It's really the only way to tell if your running it too hot or not. You can run at 150-160deg. all day long.

i was out tonight and i have a 20 tooth pinion and 86 spur i couldnt get any hotter then 112 should i gear up more ? i want to to be faster then what it is

If you still want more speed, just gear it taller a little bit at a time (larger pinion or smaller spur accomplish the same thing). Keep checking temp several times throughout a run. You don't have to gear until the motor is always at 160°, gearing lower than this lets you keep cooler temps, longer run times, and more control.

I've always used a 10.5 Novak motor in my SLASH and have geared it 22or23/86. This is with an LRP TC Spec speedo with throttle map on 2 for outsde 4 for inside. Don't notice much difference in motor temp between the 2. I always go by the 4 sec rule, if you can hold your finger on the motor for 4 sec after your race your probably ok.
I've noticed brushless motors just like to run warmer than you think it should. I still use my first 10.5 which is 2 years old and has benn "warm' thousands of times!!:) cbrignet4- I'd just use the stock SLASH springs , they seem to work the best.;) |
I've been working on my xxx-t's gearing with a 13.5 novak ss pro motor. when i first ran it, the gearing was set at 23/86 and the temps were about 100-110F max. Just today I went to 23/78 and the temps only went up about 10 degrees even in fairly deep, loose sand-like dirt with the paddles on :) After I test it out on my local track I'll probably be getting a bigger pinion.....maybe 25-28 tooth. I'm running nimh packs right now tho so the motor is probably a bit choked of power. Not sure how much would temps increase going to 2s lipos tho.
OP, keepin mind that our transmissions are different so final ratios will be different with the same pinion and spur. |
Depending on where you run but locally I've seen a lot of 19/83 doing very well for gearing. I just switched over to Jato gears in my slash and know of people running that combo with Mamba's to great satisfaction. 9/58
Gearing is cheap and fast - take a day and experiment. |
thanks guys i will take a day and go test and fill you in later with any other ? i have

Oh, and you said your "13.5 isn't much faster than stock" even geared proberly
(160 deg. after a 5 min race) my 13.5 isn't a whole lot faster than the stock motor, it has more bottom end power but top speed is pretty close. Your not going to see an earth shattering difference. |
jato gearing what exactly are you talking about , would it help reduce temps in my mod slash

No..and with stock tires you never will, they'll spin first even on carpet...why would you want too? Wheelies are cool but if that's what you want to do then buy a Stampede.
