Default drag brake

hi,
are there any down sides to using drag brake ?

does it add any extra heat to the motor or esc, or reduce run times ?

I have some in my 1/8 buggy with a Castle MM, and like to add a touch more.
thought i would check with you experts on this first.

thx guys,

dave

I am not an expert, but it being brushless it has to create that drag through energy, so it will cut into the run time.. how much? I don't know. I don't personally use it.

drag brakes will cause more stress on your tranny, higher temps, and reduced runtimes. I assume you did a conversions and are wondering if you should use mechanical brakes or your drag brake??

No, I don't want to go mechanical brakes, just wonder what the effects are using drag brake thru the esc.

i just got thinking, if I get rid of the drag brake i have programed in, i'm just going to be doing it with my finger anyway.

so i don't see how it would really matter to me anyway.
if i'm not on the gas, i'm braking.
i would never be coasting on my track....

It does generate heat and reduce run time. When I first started with electric I programmed some drag brake in my CC ESC's because.. well the option was there to do so. After turning it off on my 8 and 10 scales I actually like the way they drive better. Drag brake is just an amount of brake set in the ESC when the throttle at neutral, that takes energy every time you let off the throttle.

IMO...drag brake is only useful in small, technical and tight track. You can do less trigger braking with drag brake...

IMO, The trigger brake is to aggresive, I even have it turned down to like 30 or 40%.... I run about 25% drag brake on my SC10(4600KV mamba sidewinder BL) The drag brake is nice if the track isn't to loose..

I like alil drag brake, it pulls the car in on off power turns. I don't run any in 4wd, only 2wd.

Sent ya a pm dave.

It's all about preference. I like zero drag brake. My brother likes a little.
I just sold my Losi 8 to a buddy, and we spent a bunch of time dialing it in for him. He was jumping consistently nose up off jumps with no drag brake, so we added 30%, which was too much for jumping consistently, but not too noticable in corners where brakes were needed anyways. We ended up backing it down to 20% and that was just about right. We also cranked up his braking power to 90%,and softened it up a touch with some negative expo. Mine is only at 40%, no expo.

In 15 minute mains in the nitro races, I actually coast quite a bit instead of hammering on the brakes. Smooth, consistent lines are faster than hammering in and out of corners, and it saves some battery...

In a 5 minute qualifier (HEAVY braking) im pulling 1750mah out of my 4s5000's.

In a 10 minute heat race(kinda HEAVY braking) 2850mah.

In a 15 minute nitro main(LIGHT braking) i just recharged from last night, and put in 3400mah.

In the longer runs, i tend to be a little easier on the throttle and brakes, focusing on consistency, but it does have an obvious affect on runtime.

and for notes, i'm running an RC8, MMM 2650, geared 18/46.
