The XL5 is ready to go for a brushless setup. When the VXL's came out traxxas switched to metal diff gears (or at least the ring) and came up with a good setup to handle the brushless motors. They put these parts into the XL trucks as well because they work so well. Putting in any brushless should be really easy and the truck should have no problems handaling it.

As far as mods, RPM makes great stuff. I'd get the traxxas aluminum hub carriers in the rear and steering blocks in the front as those break most.

With brushless cars theres really no "what mods do I do to make it beefy", doing 50+mph into a curb will snap anything unless you custom reinforce it with titanium or thick steel, lol.

If you dont have a B/L car yet just run 6 cell, when your confident driving that go 7 cell. You'll have way enough fun on 7 without the need to go lipo. Lip batts are generaly $100+ and a charger is $100+. As far as reccomendations I run a duratrax ice / checkpoint charger with an external balancer. The VENOM lipo compatable chargers are cheap and good too. They come with a balancer and AC/DC hookups. As far as battery I use a Checkpoint 5400 and a CommenSense 5200. Both work perfect and have long run times. I've gotten 45min out of my slash on one charge.

Hope this helps,

Matt

What brand batts are you on about?
That was originally my thoughts aswell except I have a hobbywing setup.
I tried to use my 6 cell nimh but they can't handle it (although they are cheap-ish batts), the only way I can really get anything out of them is to use a paralel adaptor (which adds too much weight with 2 nimh batts).
Decent nimh batts in my area arn't too different in price from lipo's (espically zippy).

Seen alot'a Zippys fry so I'm not to sure about them, I"m very happy with my
Elite 3300 SC 7-cell! 32 mph on a stock xl-5 18-90 gearing. About 25 min run time
depending on my attitude that day!~
titan 12t. this thing wont die! running 185. to 205 F. for two weeks and still running strong! wheelies whenever i want!.. "surprised the hell outta me! figured it would die the day i got it~
BUT i'v been running orion speedy lube as a after run and i also used a slightly
obsessive break in,, but I'm getting GREAT PERFORMANCE. out or a RTR motor.
cant wait for my vxl to get here so we can run them side-by side on the same battery's!
