Upgrading an Elect. Rustler

Hey guys, I've had this thing sitting in my garage for about 5 years. Everything is stock, except for the broken novak explorer...I ran it for about 3 hours total prior.

I basically want to upgrade this, and just use it for fun. I would like you guys to suggest parts, with links please, to products I should buy.

I'd prefer to build its sturdiness first, if that's good? I want to jump off curbs and small ramps without worrying about it. Ahh I'm not sure what else to say. Please make suggestions :) Thanks in advance guys, first post!! :batman::tire::deathstar:spidey::ha::ha:

Edit: I do not want to spend a fortune on this. Merely enough to get myself started, and then I'll see what happens from there :)

Also, what is brushless, and what are the benefits of it? I am assuming that standard esc's do not work with it?

If you want to jump and such, stock is fine, it doesn't need any upgrades. It's the second most durable RC, behind the slash :)

Brushless is a different motor design. Basically, inside most motors there are magnets and coils. In a brushed motor the coils are spinning on the inside, and the magnets fixed to the can. This means that you need a commutator to transfer the power to the coils. This means they get hot quickly, and aren't very efficient.

In a Brushless motor, the coils are on the outside, and the timing done by the ESC (so you need a brushless specific ESC), so no power is wasted through the commutator. Brushless motors are faster and more powerful, while using the same amount of power (or less!).

brushless= less friction in the motor because of better wires and a=magnets

this is a good brushless http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXSDB8&P=ML

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXRNP7&P=M that should be pretty good because then you can upgrade to aluminum hop ups

id get the novak havoc instead of the velineon system just because its a smoother and all around better brushless system. if you want fast get the 8.5 bl motor with the havoc esc for some fast speed.

Wouldn't that wheelie bar break easily while jumping and such?

Is there a cheaper esc/motor alternative? I would hate to spend all of this money only to realize this hobby isn't for me :(

Lol, everyone's got you buying a brushless system and you're just trying to figure out if you like the hobby! If your ESC is fried, you can get new one for $30 or $40 on tower hobbies that will handle a reasonable brushed motor. I have a duratrax ESC I got used on ebay for $10 that works great. Also, to make your Rustler tougher, look at RPM suspension parts also found at tower. They're much stronger than the original parts. Keep it simple and don't spend money where it's not needed, otherwise you'll get burned out.

Well I remember enjoying it when it worked :) With school and work though, it will be tough to justify spending all of that money on something I won't be able to use often.

Would something like this be okay for basic use?

Ahh I can't post the link. It is a slightly used xl-5/titan combo on ebay.

basic use? define please? the xl5 is too basic and the titan wares out quickly on some of them. not very fast, it would be more fun getting like a novak gtx/gts off ebay for around 50$ and maybe like a 10t brushed motor to rip your tires off your rims or something.

your best bet would be to pick up a used esc from the FS/FT forum on here.

look for a motor that is under 19t, but over 10t.

Ahh, I haven't seen any in the FS/FT forum. I will look though. How much run time would I get from a 12t motor with a 3500mah battery?

Yeah Racing Ultimate Brainpower ESC 35A & 9T Sensorless Brushless Motor Set + Free Tornado Cooling Fan. For $90, is that a good deal?

people have had good luck with the ezrun combos too:nod::nod:

I would get the 9t for your rustler

eZrun Brushless motor + 35A ESC 3in1 Combo

How much battery life would I get from that with a 7.2v 3500 nimh? Thanks in advance :) That combo is only $59.99!
