Default Associated SC10 diff noise. Sounds like a stripped spur.

This noise is mainly when I punch the throttle and some what goes away at higher speeds. A guy at the track mentioned he heard the diff needed to be shimmed but I have not been able to find any information on that. Please let me know what the deal is if any ones had this issue once before.

Review this thread, there's been heaps of talk regarding the diff. Just take it apart and inspect it. Are you sure it's not the slipper making noise? Trying tightening it up some.

Basically what most have been doing is taking the outer shim and putting it inside the diff on top of the large shim where the sun gear goes. This seems to take care of the clicking noise.

Here is from Donn @ AE
OKGUYS AND GALS, here is what I found out from our R&D department.

The material that the diff gears was to be made up off was changed to beige type material we have in the kits and in the RTR's to come.

And the different material cools differently, and sometimes when the gear cools after being molded it could have an extra hundred thousand of more space inside where the large spider gear are placed. So in some of the gears when you take of you hear a click.

Not all of them will have this, but some do and the ones that do should get me your info.

We have the shims that it takes to correct this and just need you to fax or mail me your address with the notation of SC10 Shims on it and I will send you out the shims to correct the spacing problem.

Put an additional shim in the diff behind the moon gears. The sound you hear is the diff gears stripping. I had the same issue and went through 2 sets of gears. Add another shim and you be ok.

Default Parts?

Cool thanks all. Not the slipper! There is certainly a stripped gear in the tranny, it got worse within about 5 laps. I assume all the tranny gears are the same as a T4 so I shouldn't have any issues with getting the parts I need.

I had that problem, take the diff apart and put some shims behind the drive pin, it will only fix your problems for a short period of time and I would also recommend packing the diff with lithium grease.

Hope this helps.

Associated contact page...https://www.teamassociated.com/contact/

Initial gear diffs were notorious for being a bit "off" with the sun/planet gears mesh. Do you have an original SC10 diff? I kind of doubt Team Associated will send out shims this late in the game. A diff rebuild kit is what you need. I think I've read just about every T4.1/T4.2/SC10 thread there is. I've never seen/heard anyone use more than one shim behind each of the gears inside the gear diff. I know I used two shims behind the sun gear on my 1/8 scale buggy and, BOOM, I was back in business. The T4/SC10 gear diff has no more play/room behind the sun gear for another shim...I've tried. Oh, how I've tried.

I had my doubts that my old diff gears were shot. They didn't look too bad to me. After installing new rebuild kit's sun/planet gears, the grinding/gear skippin' went away.
