Default XXXT W/ Novak SS5800 Melting NiMH batteries... HELP!

I dont know why but for some reason my XXXT W/ Novak SS5800 Keeps melting batteries. Its rated to take a 6 or 7 cell battery so that's what I have put into it. It runs great, tranny is smooth I have rebuilt the DIFF and it works great. What can possibly cause batteries to be melting? If I were to change to 2s 25C lipo Batteries would they melt too? Is it pointless to switch to lipo if I am melting NiMH batteries, or would that maybe solve my problem. I need to put a new fan on my ESC because the old fan stopped working for some reason. BUT I was melting batteries with or without the esc getting hot. Help!!

Unless there is something terribly wrong with the ESC or the batteries were old.. you shouldn't be melting batteries.

Maybe your gearing is a bit to high... but you would probably damage the ESC/Motor before the batteries melt.

I would call or email Novak about this problem. One thing to consider is that if you do need to send it in, they have a great upgrade program to a newer model that would cost less than buying it new with the trade in.

It has melted 2 7 cell tenergy batterys. It has melted also 2 6 cell tenergy propels. Would replacing all the wires from motor to esc and esc to battery be worth my while?

Or I guess I can trade in my motor/ esc for a Novak GTB/SS 8.5 Pro Brushless System for about $140 including shipping.

BUT I would really rather put that $140 into lipo for my current setup, but will it just end up blowing my lipo battery?

Any other ideas on whats going on here? Could my gearing really be causing the batterys to melt?? Or what else could it be? Just a bad ESC, nothing else?

I would have to say that it could very well be the quality of the cells.. There has been a lot of negative feedback on the Tenergy cells here on the forums. The consensus is that even for half the price of other packs, they aren't half as good...

Sorry...

WELL. I was running a 26T pinion and its suggested to only run up to at most 22T with the system I got. I switched to a 19T Pinion and I am going to go run it right now. With any luck I will be gone for a half hour, LOL but if it gets hot, BRB. I'll post results.

WOW, a 26 pinion! I think you found your problem. With the SS5800, I would stay under 20 for the most part. If you have general purpose tires like Dirt Hawgs, go even small for the pinion.

There is only one reason that your batteries are getting so hot and that is poor interconnection between cells within the pack itself. We see this all the time with these poor quality stick packs. When you start pulling a lot of amps the resistance of each interconnect is so high that it starts to heat up. It’s like having 7 little toaster ovens inside your batteries on a six cell pack. When you went down to a 19 tooth pinion you drastically cut down the amps and cut down the internal heating of the pack. This is fine but now you are probably not getting the full use out of your speed control and motor. My suggestion would be to invest in a good quality 20C or higher Lipoly battery and a good Lipoly charger.

I put in an 18T pinion today and it killed my spur gear, I think that the motor/pinion may have moved just a little bit off the spur therefore stripping the spur. I will try getting the Lipo 25C packs at my local hobby store or maybe order them. From there if I keep melting batteries I give up LOL.
