Default Installing VXL system in a Rustler XL-5?

Just wondering if I need to put in an all-steel tranny like the Rustler VXL or just a steel idler? Thanks, Drew. Also could I use a Maxamps 8 cell pack instead of a 7-cell pack in a stock Rustler XL-5?

if you are going to run a vxl system in the rustler i would indeed put the all the steel parts in the tranny. i have hear of the idler gears stripping out with the vxl.
you do have the gray trans case correct.

the stock xl-5 will handle 8 cell packs according to the xl-5 manual.

Yea I have the newest one with the Jato style body. Would I use the 7cell gearing, 86/28 with a 8 cell pack?

that i have no idea. have never run with that setup.
just something you are going to have to play with. try different setups.
if you goto the traxxas site. look at their gearing. they have for 6cell 7 cell and for 11 volt lipo.
start with the 7 cell. check temps. prob something between 7 and lipo will work out ok for you.

with a vxl 7 or 8 cell setup you will most def need the idler gear..i tore mine up with a mamba 7700/2s lipo setup and I wasn't even driving it that hard..
