viper i understand the gearing for the track thing. what i am trying to do is gather info for myself and others who might be using this motor in the future. this way we can be closer to getting the right gearing combos right off the bat.
cain from what i have read the rc8 uses a 43 / 10 diff ratio, i dont know what spur you use but if you used a 46 tooth then with a 20 pinion that would be 9.89 -1 and a 17 would be 11.65-1.
so for me using the standard 43/13 buggy diff i would need about a 13 tooth to get 11.72-1 and a 16 pinion to get a 9.53-1 ratio. i am hoping to get more feedback from other guys just to compare.

anyone know the ratio for an RC8? Had it written down but can't find it.
For me, I use the following RC8:
Medusa 2000Kv 60mm V2 motor (or the Neu 1512 2.5D 2050Kv motor)
PolyRC 4S 6000mah Battery 25C
Gearing range between 17T - 20T
Temps: 135 - 145ish
Tracks: tight to more free flowing
ESC Settings (Mamba Monster V1)
- Timing Lowest
- Cutoff 13.2V
- Brakes 40%
- Punch Control 20%
- Start Power Low
using anything lower than 10% for punch control would cause more pronounced cogging effect on harder throttle pulls. You have to be really smooth on throttle to do that, or, play with start power I am thinking.
I don't really change gearing between the Neu and the medusa. Both do about the same, Medusa feels like it has more low end, Neu, more top.

They are not user rebuildable but their customer service is great & fast. I stripped the mounting holes in one of my 36-60's. I filled out the form from their web sight. I addmitted to stipping the holes myself. I shipped it on a Tuesday. On Friday morning I got an e-mail from them saying they got my motor. Friday afternoon I got another e-mail saying they had shipped me a package which I got the following Monday. A whole new motor.

Where to buy Medusa motors? I am running a Neu 1512/1.5(4s) and want something a little softer on the bottom. Which motor will help me?

Purchase direct from Medusa Research. If anything the price is either the same or possibly slightly lower at the moment due to some special offers compared to on-line retailers like RC Monster. Actually there's some newer motors that the on-line vendors may not have in-stock yet that you can get direct from Medusa. My Medusa arrived so fast I didn't know what to do with it. I think Medusa is loving us surface guys right now because we are buying up a lot of their lower Kv 50 and 60 mm motors. They have their 70 and 80 mm motors available now to respond to this growing market demanding brushless motors for bigger and heavier surface R/C's.
I've been told 4 pole motors in general prefer higher timing settings to prevent cogging.

I just bought the Medusa 36-60-2000 and need a little help. I'm putting it in a Losi 8ight.
I am wondering about the gearing and MMM settings.
Running 4S 5000. I bought a 12 pinion (my track is a medium sized track, very 1/10 scale). Anyone have conservitive MMM settings? I just want the thing to be reliable, not over geared or anything. Thanks!!

I would say that gearing should be about the same as guys are doing for the Neu 1512 2.5D 2050kV motor. which I think is 14T on the 46T pinion.
As for settings on the mamba monster, go with the following initially:
Start Power: Low
Timing: Low
Cutoff: 12.8 - 13.2V
Punch Control: 20% (I use this on my RC8, play with it till you find what you like)

The endbell started popping off on me after about 7 track days. I was running it hot at 180degF though. I plan on sending it in for repair to have as a backup. I ended up getting a tekno 1512 2.5d. The tekno has a sealed, finned can, screwed down endbell, exit wire protection, bigger bearings. I hope all these extra features make for a reliable motor because I'm pretty tired of having my electronics fail.
