Talking Yokomo YZ 2 Cal 2 vs YZ 2 Cal 3.1

Hi guys,

Just want to ask some questions about the difference between the Yokomo YZ 2 Cal 2 vs YZ 2 Cal 3.1

I want to get into 2wd buggy (new to rc) and a local guy is selling both of these buggies together. The local hobby shop only sells yokomo stuff.

MAIN QUESTION:
Whats the difference between the Yokomo YZ 2 Cal 2 vs YZ 2 Cal 3.1 and are the spare parts between the two interchangeable?

I dont want to buy a buggy that i cant get spare parts for. The owner of the local hobby shop says he has 90% of the spare parts for the YZ2 cal 3.1. But i dont know if that means that those parts will fit on the old version.

Sorry for a newbie question. But its SOOO hard to find information online about yokomo buggies.

the short answer is yes, most parts are interchangeable. where you have to watch out is things like changes to hinge pin sizes...So you have a cal2 but you want to run the 3.1 rear a-arms. the 3.1's use a larger diameter inner hinge pin (and outer IIRC) so you have to update the rear suspension inserts as well.

I would suggest downloading the manuals for the cars you are looking at and start cross referencing part numbers and info. I did this when starting with my Cal2 and it gradually morphed into a 3.1 and now a WS based SO1.0. If I had to do it all over again and buy once cry once, I should have just bought whatever the latest released car is (SO2.0 currently)

Hi, Thanks for the response.

I bought the Cal 3.1 and cal 2. Im a beginner and maybe i will not enjoy racing it. Who knows haha.

Thanks for the insight.

Good to know that the cal 2 can be essentially built into a cal 3.1.

I got a spare LC gearbox for the cal 3.1. Whould it be a bad idea to put it onto the cal 2?

Just fyi to fit the LC gearbox to a CAL2, you will either need to replace the RF mount with a CAL3.x one, or remove a fair bit of material from the CAL2 RF mount as the shape of the gearbox is different

I've done basically the same thing. Started with a cal2 and it's a willspeed 3.1 now. Are you running on carpet?
