I would say yes, get the dirt spec for clay but buy the Laydown transmission for it.

I am running a LD2 SS on High Grip clay running 7k 2 gear diff right now, it is smoother driving around the turns than the ball diff.

V2 Diff released. Seems like its the same as the v1. Fits all the previous models. Are there actual improvements or money grab? The previous alloy diff has been OOS since forever :/

I race on high grip clay, but miss the old loose dirt sometimes. Depending on the grip of the clay, I would get the regular M for mod and ss for stock. I am running on high grip clay, the fast guys are using a gear diff. I am using more of a med grip astro setups on my LD2 SS with L1R rear hubs.

I think the dirt spec is more geared towards Australia with their big, old-school outdoor tracks. A lot of the AE guys there run the layback trans, though you'd never want to run it on an indoor clay track, no need. Having run my LD2 on wet and sealed clay along with Hobby Action on the 2whl worlds layout about 2 weeks ago, the M or SS would be the way to go.

New one has a larger internal volume so can hold more oil.

How do most think the ld3m will work on indoor clay with a balldiff in 17.5? Anyone have a part number for 17.5 spur gears ?

Great, especially with U4226 71t spur gear.

Mine is great with the 71 tooth spur gear. Ball diff is nice, but I found the 2 gear diff to be better for myself. Make sure if you have the ball diff you get a couple of rebuild kits. Even building the diff on the money, I find the Schumacher ball diffs a tad loose for my liking.

Based on Schumacher's description "Alloy Differential for the LD3", the new gear differential housing (U8396 and U8397) probably uses the thicker planetary gear shims (U8433 Gear Diff Rebuild Kit - L1R, LD3) found on the L1R and the LD3. The older gear differential housing (U7993 and U7994) uses the old thinner planetary shim (U4385 Gear Diff Rebuild Kit - KR,KC,L1/EVO,LD/2,ST/2) .

For reference, the shim dimensions are listed in the manuals at the following locations.
LD3 manual: Page 4 (or .pdf page 5 of 38), BAG A - Step 09
LD2 manual: Page 11 (or .pdf page 12 of 42), BAG D - Step 28a

having an LD2 and now an LD3 I'm kind of surprised Schumacher hasn't made a change to the gear box gears. 32 pitch gears in the gear box seams outdated. they definitely sound a lot different than anything else on the track. you would think an aftermarket company would jump on an opportunity like this.

Raced my LD3 for the first time yesterday. Great driving vehicle. Coming from a B6.4, the LD3 has more steering and I find I needed to tune it out where on the B6.4 I was always trying to tune more steering in. Also, the design is more simplified and parts are more robust, especially the front end components.

Does the stock cougar LD3 racer have a ball diff?

Welcome to the Schumacher side! there’s snacks and refreshments over to the left. Make sure to stock up on arms, hubs (if plastic) and maybe a spare front end. Most hobby shops don’t have any kind of Schumacher parts other than tires. I’m still running the laydown but it’s nearly indestructible. I love how much air control I have. I sometimes look like a pro when I jump
