TLR 4.0 SR or 5.0 AC?
Looking to get into racing. I have never raced rc at all. I am thinking that due to my low skill level buying the new 5.0 when it comes out wont really effect how well I finish just do to my skill being so low. Figured I could save 130ish dollars and get the older model. My only concern is parts support now that the new one is coming out. Thoughts?

I plan on racing the stock 17.5T class. Almost all the tracks in my area are indoor carpet or outdoor fake turf stuff. Like the green fake carpet grass stuff.

I've been racing for about 6 months and began with cheap used gear, then moved up to a 22 4.0 when the 5.0 was released and the prices dropped. I've encountered a couple other new racers at the track that did the same. None of us are even close to approaching the limits of the 4.0 on the carpet tracks we run. For that matter, none of us are even close to moving up from Novice class to even run in Stock 2WD. I'm sure a lot of people will tell you that you can't compete at a track without cutting edge gear, but if you're anywhere near the skill curve of the guys I've raced getting into the competitive side, I'd say to save your money and work your way up with the 4.0. If you drive like our group did in the first few races, the 4.0 and 5.0 will do the same job crashing every other jump anyway.

My vote for a new driver is to go with the cheaper car and motor but spend a little more on a decent esc. The esc will still keep be good in the new car when you are ready for it and by that time a new faster motor will be released. Personally I'm still competitive with a 3.0 running in mod with an older esc. Running on carpet. I have no issues getting the parts I need. I would recommend as your first upgrade on that track surface a gear diff. I find ball diffs don't last.

If running on high grip (carpet or astro) then you will need the regular 4.0not the SR. The SR has ligot weight driveline and won't stand up to the high grip.

for the 22 4.0 or 4.0 SR, its a horse a piece for cost. the gear diff is worth every dollar and will work with standard 4.0 axles, but the gear diff wont work with the SR axles so would have to upgrade those too. at that point, you are almost to the $300 mark, and the AC isnt much more if you can wait. thats what i would do. maybe buy something used with a gear diff and sell when the AC comes out.

You could also look for a used 4.0. There will probably be a lot of those for sale locally.
