I know someone out there has done this before me...

I have a Bomber with lots of Incision stainless parts. It weighs 7.5 lbs now, and is still running on the stock 35T motor and ESC. It's got the Yeti 2 speed tranny, and all other gearing is stock.

I don't compete but enjoy trail running, hill climbing, bashing, and crawling with it. Needless to say, the stock motor and ESC have a bit of trouble pushing such a heavy vehicle, so it's finally time for an upgrade.

I've had trouble finding a 1/10th scale setup that's recommended for this weight and driving conditions, so I've started considering fitting an 1/8th scale motor and ESC.

It looks like if I add teeth to both the pinion and spur gears, keeping the ratio near the same, it'll give me enough room beside the tranny for the larger motor. There's not a lot of room, however, for a larger spur gear under the cover. And there's not much room in there for the longer motor shaft that will be normal on an 1/8th scale motor. I may have to run it with out the cover and just deal with the wear and tear.

I don't keep the interior cover (driver and navigator) installed, so I have plenty of room for the ESC.

So the first question is, am I missing anything else about fitting the larger scale parts? I know the additional power behind all that weight will be rough on the (currently) stock drive train. I'll replace parts as they break.

Next question is on the KV rating of the motor. I don't have any experience with sensored brushless motors, so I feel like I'm guessing a bit. Here's the combo I'm considering:

XERUN XR8-Plus ESC and XERUN-4274SD-G2(2250KV), both from Hobbywing.

I'd like to keep using the two 3S LiPo's I already have, so "Volting up" isn't in the cards for now.

I do want to still be able to crawl, but also want it to be quite a bit faster than it is now. I think that should be easy with the 2 speed tranny.

Any pointers or advice is much appreciated!

This one says its for vehicles weighing less than 8lbs and can be run on 3-4s and still looks to be a normal 1/10 scale size.

I am not a rock crawler but couldn't help trying to find something as you described.

The crawler section is going to be a better place to ask questions about the bomber.

I would think that besides twisting up your drive line, the weight of a 1/8 motor is going to really offset your center of gravity.

The sensored systems by Castle that Tbuggy suggested would probably be better. If you need more then a 550 motor would be the next step.

Thanks the the feedback. Castle actually told me not to use any of their 1/10 motors. They said they'd be fine for crawling, but not the faster stuff, especially hill climbing with a heavy buggy. They don't recommend over 5 lbs 1/10 scale vehicles for that kind of use.
