Just a couple of days away now!


Track Setup will be taking place on Friday evening from about 6PM - 8PM. All racers are more than welcome to come out that evening for a visit and to setup pit areas. This way we can get the pleasantries over with early before we spend the next two days trying to run each other off the track... just kidding!

Note that registration will be open on Friday night for those that want to avoid the line on Saturday morning.

Finally, depending on when we finish the track, there may be an hour of practice time before it gets dark. There will be 3.5 hours of practice available on Saturday morning before the qualifiers start.

We'll see everyone soon!

Track Location
BC Transit Park 'n' Ride Lot beside the Juan de Fuca Recreation Center (1767 Island Highway, Colwood BC)

Directions from Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal
1. Drive off the ferry and keep South on the Pay Bay Highway (#17) for about 25 kms.
2. Take the McKenzie Ave exit ramp and go West on McKenzie Ave for about 2 kms.
3. Go North on the Trans Canada Highway (#1) for about 3 kms.
4. Take the Colwood exit. As the exit lane splits be sure to stay to the left.
5. This is now the Old Island Highway (#1A). Follow it for about 3 kms.
6. Turn left on Ocean Blvd.
7. Follow Ocean Blvd around the corner and the track will be in the parking lot on your right.


Directions from Victoria International Airport
1. Leave Victoria International Airport on Willingdon Road and follow Willingdon for about 1 km.
2. Turn left on McTavish Road.
3. Immediately turn right (South) on the Pay Bay Highway (#17) and follow the highway for about 18 kms.
4. Take the McKenzie Ave exit ramp and go West on McKenzie Ave for about 2 kms.

Speed Weekend 2009 was a resounding success! We had 54 individual racers making up 95 entrants vying for bragging rites on our asphalt track this weekend. We had time for three rounds of qualifying on Saturday, and a last-chance round on Sunday morning before the mains.

Thank you so much to all the out-of-town racers that braved the ferries to join us for our big race:

I want to personally thank the following people for their extremely generous contributions to Speed Weekend 2009. We often read out sponsor company names, but these are the people behind those companies that really deserve the thanks.

Mick Szirmay and Brian Ashmore
Once again, Mick and Brian are the reason everyone left the race with one or more awesome trophy plaques. Mick of Dekelz.com spent a huge amount of time creating the super cool graphic, printing them, and mounting them on the plaque boards. Brian of Swiftsure Cabinetry spent countless hours building over 100 plaque boards for the race. A HUGE thanks goes out to these two individuals for stepping up in the biggest way to produce such an awesome product that each and every racer received.

Nick and Jody spent most of their weekend behind the microphone. Together, these guys called probably called 90% of the races all weekend. Thanks for being the voice of Speed Weekend guys!

Craig Roberts
When Craig told me that he was going to lay down a diagonal track for Speed Weekend, I was initially scared. I thought it might not be "accepted" by our visitors. Well, that track ended up being the coolest Speed Weekend layout to date. After the race was over I was was chatting with some other racers and they told me that they loved the cool layout. Awesome design Craig! Even a certain Jr. Calandra would have loved that one with the "make or break" chicane section!

Thanks for the kind words John. I felt bad after talking with you about your marshalling troubles in your main. I hate it when that affects a race outcome. Thank you so much for taking a chance on us and coming over for the race. You are a great ambassador (your whole group is) for racing in the Lower Mainland!

It'd be awesome to have you back for Central Saanich Days! $5 race fee, free pancake breakfast, no hotel costs, beer garden, spectators in bleachers, and only 15 mins from the ferry terminal - it's a cheap and easy fun day of racing. Or, the entire weekend if you prefer!

After everyone headed home on Sunday, the IROCC locals gathered and decided that we are 100% behind a Richmond trophy race later this summer. When your group decides on a weekend, we will fill our vans and trucks to the brim and come over "en-masse".

I wanted to share a couple of Speed Weekend 2009 stories that stand out in my mind as examples of why this hobby is such a great one. As always, it really comes down to the people:


Tom Weston
After a tough day of qualifying on Saturday, Tom found himself in one of the lower heats on Sunday morning for the last-chance qualifier. Obviously this was not an ideal situation... but Tom ran the heat cleanly and everyone worked together to allow him to get in a decent run. After the race, Tom showed his appreciation by asking the race announcer to thank the other drivers in the heat for being so courteous. Now, that's a class act. Thanks Tom!


Mike Mittlestead
After winning a Protoform Touring Car body as a door prize, Mike graciously asked that we donate the prize to one of our newer racers that would have the biggest need for some extra lexan. Thanks Mike!


Eddie Dinter and Pit Team
With two minutes remaining in the Nitro B-Main warmup, Eddie ran into some trouble and broke his right-front steering block. This was disaster as it looked as if his day was over. Super Mario grabbed the car and headed to the pits. The race director permitted Eddie two "mercy minutes". The next four minutes saw an unbelievable team effort to get Eddie's car fixed in time. Eddie, in his pit chair, was surrounded by a team of no less than five other guys working together to get the steering block replaced. With 20 seconds to go, Eddie was on his way back to the driver's stand while Mario was sprinting toward the starter box. The engine flashed up, the tank was filled, and the car was on the grid at "less than five"! Awesome work! In the end, Eddie didn't disappoint... he went on to place second in that race, and secured a bump up spot to the Nitro A-Main!

Hey Guy's............ My first race on the Island was an absalute blast. You guys realy know how to put on a good show! I look forward to next year and if I can swing it, maybe we will see you in a couple of weeks for Sanich Days (I think that is how you spell it!) I know Dad (Byron) and most of the mainland crew look forward to that race every year.
