Cheaper hp

Or you can just buy a Collari 5 port for $420 guarenteed to be just as quick, just ask anyone that was at Mingara for a performance report.,

David 07-25-2002 02:56 PM

You are all forgetting 5 ports are ILLIGAL in all IFMAR events that includes most Moorebank club days, for those races my $440 Jp is more then fast enough ( it just needs a better driver  )

So what is going to be the flavour motor for next month !!!
The nitro touring scene is out of control, and some say that about the electric cars (I FULLY AGREE).
The thing that amazes me about Nitro touring cars, is that you chase all the horse power, but still have chassis that is too narrow to really handle the speed, thus by putting on a good gripping set of tyres the cars traction roll.
Is pore handling really a substitute for straight line speed ?

contact 07-25-2002 04:29 PM

i said about 6 months ago (or maybe more) that 200mm were becomming baby 1:8 cars with all the problems associated with that - namely cost for the average punter

as for hosepower and chassis's coping im not a contender but i find my yokomo is dirveable with either an 3 port RB or a 5 port Collari... it has not traction rolled in ages (and the way the other cars go on the track i would say there coping with the horsepower too)

$740 for a little 12 Motor? :weird:

Thats crazy, a competitave 8th scale Engine is cheaper than that!

And all you Nitro guys think 8th Scale is expensive...think again!

AMGRacer 07-25-2002 06:21 PM

Alot depends on the track you run at. The Moorebank track lends itself to a horsepower war. At my local track horsepower is not really the main deciding factor and many people race MT12 engines very competiviely against JP RS12s and the like.

fastolfart 07-25-2002 06:23 PM

Not trying to criticise too many people out there, but when you watch this little monsters try and circulate a track, compared with 1/8 or 1/10 235mm cars, they are not the best handling car that I have seen.
(note with tin top body, as I haven't seen the Lola bodied cars on a decent track).
And what makes things worse is when you get the lesser experienced drivers spearing off the track every where, with the idea that they require the latest high horse power motor on the market.
The nitro touring car has handling issues when compared to almost any other class of car (except the monster trucks) with it's narrow wheel track and high Center of Gravity.
Apart from the most experienced drivers, do we really need the big horse power ? Or should we be splitting the class up into different classes like electric stock, mod etc ?
I think that a lot of drivers would be supprised if they had a drive of a 235mm 1/10 car, how much better they are to driveand set up with the added bonus of how much more money they would have in there pockets
My thoughts anyway from many years of racing a lot of different classes

is that because it is too big for 200mm? often in the context of nitro racing it the length of the straight becomes the focal point of the track... i think murwillimbah wins their straight / sweeper combination is enormous!:p

I have never been to Moorebank but I have seen pictures. Interesting fact. All 3 port nitro engines accelerate at roughly the same speeds. Ie. a OS CV will accelerate just as fast as a JP RS12 given the same gearing and chassis weight. Where the JP is better is that it can keep pulling past 20Kish rpm and keep on going where the CV stops. So tracks where you spend more time above 20Krpm favour the JPs etc. Tracks where you accelerate and brake a lot and dont get large speeds up will make both engines just about equal. Our track is more like the latter tracks, in fact a CV equipped NTC3 was running similar laptimes the other week to a OS TR equipped V1R. This for sure would not happen at Moorebank.

fastolfart 07-25-2002 11:08 PM

Gentlemen, time to play the set-up game !!!
Motors require the right set-up to make them work, seems that no-one on the smaller tracks is attempting to do so, otherwise the JP's should be laps ahead

oww yeah well my second hand $300 rs12 can keep up with a jp!:p

out of curiosity i checked out the prices of a 5 port rb... $1000!!

speed is nothing without control. i was doing more laps with my crappy 2 shoe clutch equiped rs12 than what i did last week with my centax equiped rs12:rolleyes:

paul you might be able to do a 20sec with your electric but it requires a ute full of stuff to do it:p ...plus nitro tourers "sound" quicker.

on a serious note, regarding the 235mm issue. i think the problem here is start up costs as opposed to ongoing costs. sure 235mm might be cheaper easier, but for the average hobbyistit's the initial costs that are demanding. on top of this, with tourers being so competitative people may be of the opinion "why change, when all the competion i need is in tourers" it's disapointing to see 235mm so weak but what is needed is maybe something like a demonstration day at moorebank or a demonstration day to some of the more experienced begginers and or interested onlookers, (moorebank always has at least 5 or 6 people per meet interested in the hobby).

if 235mm's are as easy to drive as you say (never driven one myself)and the costs are equal to, if not lower than tourers why not have the begginers jump into the 235mm class straight away.
also if 235mm ran with the volvo bodies alfa bodies etc it might attract more hobbists. (follow the idea that tourers had. if people could relate to them, ie cars they drive on the road that may be more attracted to it).

(deep breath:p  ...) also there are a few 235mm drivers at penrith which bash around every tuesday night. moorebank 235mm racers could head down one night (wait till it gets a bit warmer 'cuz it's absolutly freeeeeezing down there :p ) and help out the 235mm drivers there. maybe create a interclub relationship and organise for these guys to come race at moorebank. thus increasing numbers and eventually competition. clubs days don't clash so this shouldn't be a problem. (MAYBE FREE YEARLY MEMEBRSHIP TO THE 235MM GUYS FROM PENRITH AS A INCENTIVE??)

there's alot in this also for stewart G, so maybe he could get into it somehow? ( i noticed he's started racing in the class)

black-knight 07-26-2002 12:36 AM

i hope to be getting a 235mm in the next few weeks...can't wait!

Besercoe 07-26-2002 01:37 AM

bk you must have way too much money? how many cars do you have now?

i'm starting a collection, but only good kits all dodgy ones will be discarded, like the rotten dogs that they are!...anyone want an neo?

Speaking of engines, have a look at the modifications done on this piston/sleeve and crank on an old MT-12.

This was John H's old engine - now u know why this thing was so bloody quick.

Sorry about the not so great pictures :(
