a mate and me are about to put in a large order to speedtech rc for a transponder, speedy and a heap of yokomo hop ups. The order will work to to about $500 USD. Will I get hit for gst and/or import duties by customs??

it all depends on what the supplier writes on the customs slip and the value they write

i think you get slugged on anything over $200AU may i be corrected???

if you get hit it will be 10% of the value in $aus

i think the sum is $500 australian or higher. don't quote me though. just get the guys from speedtech to place a value of 200us on it. i haven't been charged gst ever.

Car parts are most likely to be duty free.
transponder and speedies may have duty payable.
The postage is added to value of the goods before duty is calculated.
For example
value of goods + postage + duty = total
duty amounts vary from item to item.
GST is 10% of total.
for a $850 , $50 postage, 5% duty ($42.50) = $942.50 GST = 94.25
amount payable would be for duty $42.50 and GST $94.25. total $136.75.

If the duty and GST is under $50au, customs usuall don't care

This is only an example, figures are an estimate only. all currencies are in $AU.

I know somebody who works in customs and this statement is accurate. They are told to not bother invoicing for GST amounts under $50.

As long as it is sent EMS (which will be United States Postal Service) you have a $1000 dollar oz limit before charges apply. Its only $250 by courier. The usual way speedtechrc sends is by EMS (USPS) so you should have no worries at that value.

You should not have any problems at all. I have ordered from speedtech before in excess of $500 USD before (although as droganfire said, less than $1000) and have had no issues. You should get the order in about a week after ordering. Speedtech have great customer service!

Dragonfire is correct, EMS or via post its $1000 limit, via courier its around the $250 mark.

the method of shipping makes absolutely no difference to the minimum value before gst is charged,maybe unofficially, but not officially, i was charged gst on a package from the US on items worth US$345, needless to say i was pissed, and this was sent via EMS. The only way to get away with it is as suggested earlier, the sender needs to put a low value on the customs declaration, as my good buddies in HK do , however, towerhobbies will not do this, in fact they proudly display the invoice in a clear window on the outside of the box, friggin idiots .

This may be something that suppliers from the USA are required to do by law? I`ve brought in parts from Team Associated and they do exactly the same thing

i dont think its law, coz stormer and speedtech dont do it, they just use the little green declaration forms, must just be company policy for some i guess, but it sucks lol.

Oh goody, lets discuss the best way to avoid paying tax. An aquaintance of mine got fined for not declaring his internet purchases in his tax return, can happen.

Good to see that people are happy to display who they r sponsored by.........................then go and undermine the very shop that supports them by giving advice on how to order from overseas .......... good one dangles thats they way to kiss the hand that feeds.
